Two-thirds of South Africa's population now lives in urban areas, according to the most recent survey of the country released by the South African Institute of Race Relations in Johannesburg on Tuesday 22 January. The data in the survey comes from the World Bank.

"AHMEDABAD: Navsarjan Trust was a response to one of the worst instances of caste violence in Gujarat. In January 1986, the Rajputs of Golana village in Anand district shot dead four dalits over a land dispute.
Eighteen people were injured and several dalit houses were set on fire. Activist Martin Macwan, who had lost a colleague in that violence, started Navsarjan in 1989 to take up the cause of dalits."

Sequestering refugees in rural camps is no longer the norm: The most recent estimates indicate that almost half of refugees flock to urban areas and just one third to rural camps, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). In evidence submitted to the Land Reform Review Group established by the Scottish Government to push forward land reforms, Community Land Scotland has called for new land rights for communities.
In their evidence Community Land Scotland argues for:
Extended rights over all land in Scotland for communities to have an absolute right to purchase land
The creation of a land agency to facilitate `mediated negotiations’ with land-owners to achieve land transfers
An increase in the Land Fund for community purchases to £10m a year
The ILC Secretariat is hiring consultant for a four-five month period to: (a) act as interim coordinator for about five months; (b) support the Asia regional Steering Committee in the recruitment of a new coordinator; and, (c) support the Asia Steering Committee in the selection of a new host organization for the regional coordination unit.

A Brazilian indigenous community that has been facing eviction from a building next to the Maracana football stadium has celebrated the police's decision to leave the area.
Riot police in Rio de Janeiro had encircled the area early on Saturday expecting a court order to evict them.
The building is meant to be demolished as part of preparations for next year's World Cup.
