Agriculture is the mainstay of Ethiopia’s economy, contributing over 50% of the gross domestic product (GDP), accounting for more than 85% of the labor force and over 90% of the foreign exchange earnings (Alemu et al. 2010). Consequently, the sector receives considerable attention from the government, investing 15% of its total budget over the decade and meeting the commitments by Africa’s heads of states to the African Union Maputo 2003 Declaration on Agriculture and Food Security (CAADP 2003).

CGIAR’s Climate Resilience Initiative, also known as ClimBeR, is working to address these needs. On the 21st and 22nd of February, we ran in Guatemala City the first climate security workshop in Central America: Towards a common vision on the relationship between climate, conflict, and human security in Guatemala.

Throughout Africa, climate change is posing severe challenges to agricultural production and food security. Agricultural risks—particularly those associated with drought—are a major cause of low agricultural productivity in most African countries, including Kenya. According to the Government of Kenya, four consecutive years (2008–2011) of drought caused US$12.1 billion in losses, accounting for about 8 percent of GDP, including losses in assets and disruptions to the economy across sectors (Kenya, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries 2014).

While there is consensus on the need to promote agricultural development in Africa to achieve food security and use agriculture as an engine of growth, there is a lively policy debate on appropriate policies to achieve this goal. In the past two decades, there has been a revival of policies that favor government support to agriculture in Africa, especially in the form of input subsidies.

The new Kenyan government faces a complex domestic and global environment, and it is widely expected to address key food and agricultural challenges with a new set of policies and programs. This policy brief presents key recommendations from a forthcoming book, Food Systems Transformation in Kenya: Lessons from the Past and Policy Options for the Future, which provides research-based “food for thought and action” to support the Kenyan government’s efforts to improve food security.

Building on the Reclaim Sustainability! (RS!) programme’s baseline studies and the Gender and Social Inclusion (GESI) Reports, and in partnership with CGIAR Initiative on Diversification in East and Southern Africa (Ukama Ustawi) through International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Solidaridad facilitated commodity specific voice amplification dialogues in Zambia focused on cotton and fruits and vegetables farmers.

Climate change threatens the livelihoods of millions of small-scale farmers in East Africa. How farmers perceive climate change and its impacts has a strong bearing on how they adapt to the adverse impacts. This paper focused on factors that determine climate change adaptation and perceptions among small-scale farmers of Embu County. A survey was carried out across five sub-counties of Embu County where a multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 411 households. A questionnaire was administered to each household. A total of five FGDs were generated by the use of quota sampling.

In the Colombian context, disputes over natural resources, mainly over land, and poor governance are intertwined with armed conflict. Although efforts to address this situation, including the 2016 peace agreement signed between Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC, by Spanish acronym) are underway, these disputes continue, affecting land use dynamics. Understanding the complexity and trends in land use conflicts, as well as the specific regional characteristics underlying differing land use changes across regions, is critical.

The report discussed how the local government unit in Ivisan municipality, Capiz, Philippines coped with, mitigated, and prepared for climate related risks in the livelihood and agri fisheries sector. The goal of the research was to produce Climate Related Risk Maps and Adaptation Plans in agriculture (Climate Smart MAP/CS MAP) for the 15 villages of Ivisan. The maps will assist in decision making and planning for risks, in normal and severe years, on a long term basis.

There are few reports on dual-purpose cattle systems characterization in Latin America and Colombia based on
large datasets. This limits our understanding of their dynamics, and the establishment of public policies and
government programs to improve their productive performance, promotion and rural development. This study
aimed to characterize very small, small, medium, and large dual-purpose farms in Colombia from technical and
environmental perspectives. The data analysed were obtained from the Ganadería Colombiana Sostenible and the

Food is a vital component of Colombia's economy. The impact of climate change on agriculture and food security in the country is severe. The effects have resulted in decreased production and in the productivity of agricultural soil. Desertification processes are accelerating and intensifying. Colombia's government formally submitted its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) on December 29, 2020. This paper examines Colombia's NDC from the standpoint of the food system.

This policy brief discusses the immediate impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on the economy of Ghana with a specific focus on the agricultural and oil sectors. The study employs content analysis of various sources, including articles, published papers, and reports, and utilizes data from AfricaFertilizer.org, Ghana's Ministry of Food and Agriculture, and the World Food Programme (WFP) to explore these impacts and policy measures.
