The effective and efficient deployement of land resources as a method to resolving the pesistant clashes between farmers and herdsmen has again come to the fore with stakeholders and policy makers in the lands and agricultural sector calling for collaboration in the application of the appropriate land governance laws towards mitigating the ugly trend.
Goma, 23 November 2016 – UN-Habitat, in close collaboration with the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has launched a USD 12 million land programme that seeks to promote peace and stability.
The winners have been identified of a £3.65m Challenge Fund funded through DFID’s LEGEND (Land-Enhancing Governance for Economic Development) umbrella programme, to drive innovative and responsible investments in land, in particular agriculture. The fund, managed by KPMG LLP, seeks to improve the effects of land investments on communities in sub-Saharan Africa. Funding has been awarded to seven civil society organisations that have formed partnerships with businesses to test innovative approaches to sustainable land investment.

On 18 July 2016, the Thomson Reuters website featured an article entitled Why is the EU funding Ethiopia’s repression of land rights defenders? by Nyikaw Ochalla.
The G8 World Summit in 2003 stated that “Weak land governance and property rights systems can lead to opaque land deals.” It further states that “increasing security of land rights and transparency of land governance fosters participation of citizens, contributes to government accountability, reduces costs for businesses, and strengthens the climate for responsible investment”.
What can be done to secure poor rural people’s rights to land and water they depend on for their livelihoods, and what must be done to ensure that women’s access and tenure is secured?
