Supreme Court judges decline to hear dispute on colonial chief land

Supreme Court judges have thwarted an attempt to escalate to the apex court a land inheritance row among the children of a senior colonial government’s chief.

The five-judge bench presided by Chief Justice Martha Koome dismissed a request by George Kang’ethe Waruhiu to extend time to challenge judgment of the Court of Appeal on the ownership of a 55-acre land in Githunguri, Kiambu County.

Golden Veroleum Liberia Comes under Spotlight Again for not Living Up to MOU

IPNEWS – Monrovia: Sustainable Development Institute (SDI) and Milieudefensie, a Dutch NGO, have accused the oil palm company Golden Veroleum Liberia (GVL) of not living up the full commitment of the memorandum of understanding it signed with communities in within its concession areas. At a press conference on Thursday, August 12, both organizations called upon the Government of Liberia to ensure agribusiness in Liberia halts deforestation and rights violations.

NEA holds inception seminar for land/seascape GEF-6 project

The management of the National Environment Agency (NEA) and other stakeholders last Thursday held a day-long inception seminar for the GEF-6 project.

The GEF-6 project is a five-year pilot project amounting to US$5.6 million for the implementation of the GEF-6 land/seascape planning and ecosystem restoration.

The inception, held at the Kairaba Beach Hotel was attended by various district authorities, government official, staff of NEA, Park and Wildlife, Ministry of Environment and Department of Forestry among others.

Avocados’ potential to cut poverty

Dar es Salaam. Avocado is a fruit crop that thrives in many parts of Tanzania, with the possibility of using it to free Tanzanians from abject poverty and improve families’ levels of nutrition.

Mbeya, Njombe, Songwe, Iringa, Tanga, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Kigoma, Kagera, Katavi and Morogoro are popular regions for avocado production in the land.

A report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says that 19,449 tonnes of avocados were produced in 2016/17.

Tanzania is East Africa’s food forte. That is how it was seen during the African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF) 2021 Summit in Nairobi held between 7-10 September, which sought to highlight pathways to recovery and a resilient food systems.

Sadly, President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was hosting the summit, which promotes inclusive agriculture, had to declare drought in Kenya a national disaster. The declaration paved way for the treasury in East Africa’s largest economy, to make mitigation measures and assist over two million Kenyans severely affected by drought.

Resist divorcing land titling from land use planning in informal settlements

As it was widely reported in the newspapers of August 12, 2021, the government in partnership with NMB Bank, has launched a five-year Plot Loan scheme to enable land owners in informal settlements to survey and get title to their land. This was in part a result of the realisation that land owners were finding it difficult to foot the cost of surveying, registering and obtaining title deeds. Hand in hand with the loan, the cost of surveying has been reduced from Sh150,000 to Sh130,000. The project is being piloted in Mbarali District before rolling out to other areas,

As it happens, the Zanzibar-based firm is working around the clock to promote permaculture in Tanzania.

Permacul Design Company Ltd is developing permaculture in Tanzania as part of its role in the implementation of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Permaculture originates from ‘permanent agriculture,’ which was later changed to ‘permanent culture’ with the aspect of incorporating social aspects.
