Women across Africa have been mobilised to call on leaders on the continent to address land rights issues as one way of achieving sustainable development.

The call comes at time when women in rural areas of Africa are seen as having no piece of land, a development that has brought hiccups on food production on the continent.

Speaking at a media orientation in the capital Lilongwe, the Food and Climate Justice Taskforce disclosed that thousands of women are to develop and proclaim a charter of demands that are to be presented to the African Union (AU) at Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

One of the steering organisations in the taskforce for the food and climate justice, Oxfam, applauded the Kilimanjaro initiative saying it powerfully symbolises the challenge of the climb and represents a starting point of spreading the message across the continent.

“All women in Africa, we are going to congregate in Tanzania, a few of us are to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to speak out on women land rights on the continent,” said Carol Kayira Kulemeka who is programs manager for Oxfam.

Women in Africa are to embark on a journey for Kilimanjaro initiative through caravans from various countries in unity with rural women to assert land and natural resources rights.

Malawi women are expected to join the caravan in October that is to enter the country through Mchinji district and break for two days before proceeding to Tanzania through Karonga district.
