Samoa joined FAO in 1979 and has hosted the FAO Subregional Office for the Pacific Islands since 1996, covering 14 island states. Over the past 35 years, FAO assistance has focused on building the evidence base and capacities for policy-making, strengthening animal and plant protection and boosting agricultural productivity and marketing in the face of climate change. Samoa is involved in FAO’s new initiative on Value Chains for Food Security and Nutrition in the Pacific Islands.

A thematic study on “Urban and peri-urban forestry” focuses on the potentials and constraints for urban forestry development at regional and sub-regional levels considering the current experience and future prospects of urbanization in the region that is expected to take place in the next 15 years. As a complement to this thematic Urban and peri-urban forestry study, a livelihoods analysis of the contribution of forests and trees to urban poor livelihoods has been carried out the Sub-programme on access to natural resources of the Livelihood Support Programme (GCP/INT/803/UK).

FAO opened the Nigeria Representation Office in 1978, and has since provided unabated support to the country in the formulation and implementation of policies, strategies, programmes and projects in food, agriculture and natural resources. The cooperation aims to improve food security and nutrition and reduce poverty in a broad-based, equitable and sustainable manner. In providing this assistance, FAO has always focused on enhancing the livelihood of smallholders, who form the bulk of the rural poor, in a way that is technically, economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.
