OUR IDENTITY

We believe in a UNITED MEDITERRANEAN where the sustainable development of agriculture, food security and territorial cohesion are the seeds of social stability and inclusive growth.

We promote MULTILATERAL COOPERATION through specialised training, networked research, scientific diplomacy and political partnerships.

We contribute to REGIONAL STABILITY, food and nutrition security, health of populations, the protection of the environment and increased access to the job market of youth.

We strongly believe in INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE and DIVERSITY. Several nationalities and religions coexist within the CIHEAM.

We believe in KNOWLEDGE SHARING and the enhancement of links between knowledge and development needs.

We promote POLITICAL DIALOGUE through the organisation of meetings of the Agricultural Ministries of our member States.

We develop our actions within an ACCOUNTABILITY framework and implement them through a result-based management approach.

GPS based tools for extensively reared cattle: relationship between temperature and animal activity

Journal Articles & Books
December, 2016

A study was conducted to track a group of grazing cows by GPS-GPRS technology. GPS devices were placed in the neck of 3 non-gestating and non-lactating Morucha cows (averaged 8 years old). The GPS units emitted data regarding animal position every 10 minutes for a period of 28 days in which the animals could range freely in the experimental farm. Data were processed using the appropriate software to generate parameters related to animals’ activity, such as velocity of movement or estimated grazing area.

The effect of grazing exclusion on vegetation characteristics and plant community structure in arid lowland pastures

Conference Papers & Reports
April, 2016
Jordan
Western Asia

Rangelands are the mainstay of pastoral livelihoods worldwide. Within rangelands, there are landscape depressions or lowlands characterized by high production potentials with their unique edaphic and hydrologic properties. The purpose of this ongoing research is to evaluate the effect of grazing exclusion on the vegetation characteristics and plant community structure in the arid lowland pastoral ecosystems. Plots were randomly identified within two distinct lowlands in Majidya and Sabha, in the Jordanian Badia.

Overlooked benefits and services of grasslands to support policy reform

Conference Papers & Reports
March, 2016
Global

Despite their ecological, economic and social importance, Mediterranean grasslands continue to receive limited scientific, political and media attention. Grasslands are typically viewed as underutilized space, able to be transformed into more “valuable” land by placing it under cultivation, transforming it into forest land and/or privatizing it. This paper synthesizes a number of pertinent issues in relation to social and economic systems on grasslands within the southern Mediterranean region.

Estimation of actual evapotranspiration from remote sensing: application in a semiarid region

Journal Articles & Books
December, 2012
Spain

The potential of remote sensing for the recommendation and monitoring of irrigation practices is irrefutable. GIS have enabled the development of operational spatio-temporal tools for monitoring agricultural activity which can overcome the uncertainty brought about by problems related to water scarcity and increasing drought events. This paper presents an operational methodology for estimating actual evapotranspiration from Landsat images, and its application in the Region of Murcia (Spain).
