The United Kingdom has historically played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith in the 19th century, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two world wars and the Irish Republic's withdrawal from the union. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council and a founding member of NATO and the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999. The latter was suspended until May 2007 due to wrangling over the peace process, but devolution was fully completed in March 2010.
The UK was an active member of the EU from 1973 to 2016, although it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union. However, frustrated by a remote bureaucracy in Brussels and massive migration into the country, UK citizens on 23 June 2016 narrowly voted to leave the EU. The so-called “Brexit” will take years to carry out but could be the signal for referenda in other EU countries where skepticism of EU membership benefits is strong.

These Regulations amend the Action Programme for Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (Scotland) Regulations 2008 so as to implement Commission Decision 2009/431/EC granting derogation to England, Scotland and Wales pursuant to Council Directive 91/676/EEC concerning the protection of waters against pollution caused by nitrates from agricultural sources.The Regulations provide for a derogation from the annual farm limit of nitrogen in livestock manure which may be obtained from the Scottish Ministers by an occupier of any grassland farm within a nitrate vulnerable zone.
Land Registration (Electronic Conveyancing) Rules 2008 (S.I. No. 1750 of 2008).
These Rules, made under the Land Registration Act 2002, concern the validity of documents in the land registry network for carrying out electronic conveyancing. They also amend or disapply certain provisions of the Land Registration Rules 2003 in relation with electronic legal charges, retention and deletion of electronic documents and applications to the registrar under paragraph 1 of Schedule 5 to the Act to enter into a network access agreement and amend a rule on the time at which applications are taken to be made.
Action Programme for Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (England and Wales) Regulations 1998 (S.I. no. 1202 of 1998).
By establishing an action programme for nitrate vulnerable zones these Regulation implement, as regards England and Wales, the requirement in this respect as laid down in article 5 of Council Directive 91/676/EC concerning the protection of waters against pollution by nitrates from agricultural sources. Regulation 3 requires an occupier of a farm or livestock unit comprising all or part of a nitrate vulnerable zone to ensure that the action programme set out in the Schedule is implemented. They also provide for monitoring of the action programme (reg.
Nitrate Pollution Prevention (Designation and Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations 2013 (S.I. No. 2619 of 2013).
These Regulations amend the Nitrate Pollution Prevention Regulations 2008 so as to provide for revised designations of areas of land in England identified as nitrate vulnerable zones for the purposes of Council Directive 91/676/EEC concerning the protection of waters against pollution caused by nitrates from agricultural sources.
Planning (Hazardous Substances)(Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010 (S.R.I. No. 329 of 2010).
These Regulations amend the Planning (Control of Major-Accident-Hazards) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2009 to implement Directive 2003/105/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Council Directive 96/82/EC on the control of major-accident hazards involving dangerous substances. They amend Part A (named substances) of Schedule 3 and make transitional exemptions for purposes of Article 61 of the Planning (Northern Ireland) Order 1991.
