The United Kingdom has historically played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith in the 19th century, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two world wars and the Irish Republic's withdrawal from the union. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council and a founding member of NATO and the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999. The latter was suspended until May 2007 due to wrangling over the peace process, but devolution was fully completed in March 2010.
The UK was an active member of the EU from 1973 to 2016, although it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union. However, frustrated by a remote bureaucracy in Brussels and massive migration into the country, UK citizens on 23 June 2016 narrowly voted to leave the EU. The so-called “Brexit” will take years to carry out but could be the signal for referenda in other EU countries where skepticism of EU membership benefits is strong.

These Regulations amend the Landfill Tax Regulations 1996 in provisions concerning credit operations regarding landfill operations that are favourable to the environment. Among other things, they change the maximum credit that landfill site operators may claim against their annual landfill tax liability and simplify some of the conditions of operation placed on environmental bodies and the regulatory body. Environmental bodies shall have certain duties of notification towards the regulatory body, whereas the regulatory body shall be controlled by the Commissioners of Customs and Excise.
Contaminated Land (Wales) Regulations 2006 (S.I. No. 2989 (W. 278) of 2006).
These Regulations make provision, in relation to Wales, for the identification and remediation of contaminated land under Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.They identify categories of sites ("special sites"), including land which is contaminated land by radioactive substances in, on or under that land. In relation to such special sites the Environment Agency shall be the enforcing authority. Local authorities shall be the enforcing authority in relation to any other type of site. The Regulations also provide for the content and notification of "remediation notices", i.e.
Common Agricultural Policy Single Payment Scheme (Set-aside) (Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2006 (W.S.I. No. 3101 (W. 285) of 2006).
These Regulations amend the Common Agricultural Policy Single Payment Scheme (Set-aside) (Wales) Regulations 2005 in relation to the good agricultural and environmental conditions that apply to land set aside under the Single Payment Scheme for farmers enacted by force of Community legislation. The conditions and exemptions concern green cover, the setting aside of land for the control of weeds, use of pesticides and grazing.
Radioactive Contaminated Land (Modification of Enactments)(Wales) Regulations 2006 (W.S.I. No. 2988 (W. 277) of 2006).
These Regulations are made pursuant to the powers under Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and make provision in Wales for Part 2A to have effect with modifications for the purpose of the identification and remediation of radioactive contaminated land other than in circumstances where the operator of a nuclear installation is liable under the Nuclear Installations Act 1965, or in related circumstances.
