This fall, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) launched the Decade for Deserts and the Fight against Desertification, an effort to protect and preserve drylands, currently under threat from desertification, land degradation, and drought (DLDD).
Drylands, defined as arid, semiarid, and dry sub-humid areas, are home to one in three people, 90 percent of whom live in the developing world. These threatened areas support half the world’s livestock and make up 44 per cent of the world’s cultivated systems.

Landless farmers to get ownership rights

Pithoragarh, August 1
The Udham Singh Nagar district administration has started the process of giving ownership rights free of cost to farmers, who have occupied not more than 3.25 acres of government land and are doing farming on it, in Bazpur subdivision. The state government has issued an order to this effect.

Message from the Land Portal Coordination Unit and the ILC Secretariat on the death of Mr Marcellino de Baggis
It is with great sadness that the Land Portal Coordination Unit has heard of the death of Mr Marcellino de Baggis, who filmed and edited for Visiontime the Land Portal promotional video.
His death occurred on Sunday 7 August, 2011. Mr de Baggis was 40 years old and he left behind a wife and a three year old son.
Mr de Baggis worked closely with ILC Secretariat and the Land Portal Coordination Unit to realize the video and he enjoyed very much the work he did for the Land Portal.
