Colonialism Revamped in the Democratic Republic of Congo

140 years ago this November at the Berlin Conference, Belgium’s King Leopold was recognized as the sole owner of the Congo Free State, a territory including the entirety of today’s Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Leopold’s reign was marked by slavery, millions of deaths, and widespread atrocities committed during the first colonial exploitation of the territory’s exceptional wealth of natural resources. 64 years after its independence, the DRC remains plagued by various forms of colonialism and extraction, resulting in massive human suffering, land grabs, human rights abuses, hunger and poverty.

New partnerships reinforce a growing movement for women’s land rights

Land Data Partnership Commits to Promoting FAIR and CARE Data Principles

March 5, 2024 — In 2023, four land-sector organizations came together, with support from the European Commission (EC), to strengthen the central role of data in securing equitable land rights for sustainable development, poverty eradication, peace and the protection of human rights. The EC Land Data Partnership, which includes the International Land Coalition (coordinating the partnership), the Land Portal Foundation, the Land Matrix Initiative, and Prindex, published their Joint Statement of Intention in recognition of International Open Data Day. 

Additional LAND-at-scale activities in Chad for improved and inclusive land governance

Through the LAND-at-scale programme there have been several interventions in Chad since 2021, varying from contributing to facilitating inclusive validation of the revised land policy, to supporting women's access to land and empowerment, as well as starting the building blocks for an improved land administration system. In 2024, new activities will start that build further on results from these previous interventions.
