Regional Act No. 19 making provision on land protection, management and use.

The present Regional Act makes provision in matter of land use planning and land protection. It regulates the exercise of the relevant administrative functions by the competent authorities. The Calabria Region prompts cooperation among the Region itself, the Provinces, the Communes and Mountain Communities. The overall aims hereby pursued are sustainable development and the appropriate use of natural resources. Article 3 lays down general principles to be applied for the purposes of urban land planning. Article 8 provides for the setting up of the Territorial Information System and the Observatory of Territorial Transformation. The Region, the Provinces and the Communes shall carry out sustainability and environmental impact assessments prior to the approval of their respective plans (art. 10). Title II of the Act aims at enhancing participation of local community in the procedures which lead to the elaboration and approval of land use plans. Title IV describes fully the planning instruments and their content. Most importantly, article 17 regards the Regional Territorial Framework. Further, Title V regulates the procedures to be followed for approving the above-mentioned instruments. Title VII is entirely devoted to agroforestry land planning. The objectives to be attained are listed out in article 50, which includes among others soil protection and the rational utilization of natural resources. The Communes shall define the different agricultural areas as prescribed by article 50.
