DFID is delighted to launch the first Land Policy Bulletin, which introduces a new land and responsible investment programme - Land: Enhancing Governance for Economic Development (LEGEND).
LEGEND is a global DFID programme to support the design and delivery of new land governance programmes. In addition, through a range of partners delivering global public goods, LEGEND aims to improve land governance as an essential basis for responsible investment and inclusive economic development, and to strengthen land and other property rights at scale.
Through building policy coherence globally and stimulating innovation across government, civil society and the private sector at international, national and local levels, LEGEND aims to improve the quality and impact of private sector investments, to contribute sustainably to economic development while safeguarding rights and opportunities for poor people — rural and urban — especially for women.
LEGEND partners include (with more to be added):
- A ‘Core Land Support Team’ comprising of KPMG (link is external), Overseas Development Institute (link is external) (ODI), Natural Resources Institute (link is external) (NRI - University of Greenwich), International Institute for Environment and Development (link is external) (IIED), Institute of Development Studies (link is external) (IDS - University of Sussex) and Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (link is external) (PLAAS - University of Western Cape), with additional technical expertise coming from DAI (link is external) and Cloudburst (link is external).
- FAO - to implement the globally negotiated Voluntary Guidelines on Land Tenure (link is external)
- Global Donor Platform (link is external) - to ensure coordination, coherence and influence around land
- The INGO Landesa (link is external) - to pilot good investment practice with businesses, civil society and governments
- The Land Portal Foundation - to become an online one-stop-shop for data, information and debate on land
- The Rights and Resources Initiative (link is external) and The Munden Project (link is external) - to make corporate investment risk assessments land-sensitive
- The World Bank (link is external)- to assess land governance for investment climate reform.
