Sustaining tenure security for improved livelihoods
Land tenure security (LTS) is a concept that informs many programmes by international development agencies working on land governance. The thinking behind these programmes, in short, is that land right holders are insecure in their land tenure, which prevents them from using their land sustainably and efficiently. Increasing their tenure security will allow for e.g. a reduction in conflicts over land, higher investment into the productive use of their land, and the implementation of more sustainable land-use practices.
Policy Paper - Self-financing model for the scaling of customary land services in Uganda
This paper presents the pilot experiences with a contributory model to customary land registration in Northern Uganda and discusses the potentials, challenges, and recommendations for further scaling up. The pilot was implemented between November 2021 - February 2023 in Bululu sub-country – and is continuously backstopped and monitored by the GIZ implemented “Responsible Land Policy in Uganda “(RELAPU)” project. The so-called “Bululu self-financing pilot” is built on prior project experience in “Fit for Purpose” (FFP) land demarcation and registration of customary land in rural settings.

Lessons on land tenure and forest landscape restoration (FLR): A focus on sub-Saharan Africa

Potential Risks to Women’s Land Rights From Climate Actions: Exploring Matrilineal Communities in Colombia, Costa Rica, and Panama
This paper explores ways in which global actions to tackle climate change can potentially undermine women’s land tenure security. While there is greater cognizance of the role of secure land tenure as a critical enabler of global climate goals, climate actions that fail to account for differential tenure systems and gender dynamics risk eroding women’s customary land rights and associated social support systems. The paper recommends ways to balance climate goals with land rights protection.
