Desde mucho antes de la apertura de su oficina en 1979, la FAO ha brindado asistencia técnica y financiera para impulsar el desarrollo del sector agropecuario, pesquero y forestal, así como a la seguridad alimentaria y nutricional en la República Dominicana. A través de un largo número de proyectos y programas, la FAO ha focalizado sus intervenciones en áreas como la seguridad alimentaria, la inocuidad y sanidad agropecuaria, la sostenibilidad de recursos naturales, la gobernanza forestal y el fortalecimiento institucional.

Este informe está dirigido a revisar y resumir la información existente sobre el secuestro de carbono, con el fin de analizar como los recursos disponibles y los programas específicos se pueden implementar en las tierras áridas que constituyen las regiones con mayor degradación del suelo en el mundo.

This note on the Machobane system is based on information gathered by an FAO Investment Centre mission which visited Lesotho in July 1996 on behalf of the Government and the International Fund for Agricultural Development, to prepare the ground for the formulation of a Sustainable Mountain Agriculture Programme for possible IFAD financing. Observations of farmers attitudes and behaviour as well as relevant socio-economic data were collected in February 1996 in several villages of two Districts in Lesotho and are presented.
