Ecosystem accounting is a new area of environmental economic accounting that aims to measure ecosystem services in a way that is in line with national accounts. The key characteristics of ecosystem accounting include the extension of the valuation boundary of the System of National Accounts, allowing the inclusion of a broader set of ecosystem services types such regulating services and cultural services. Consistent with the principles of national account, ecosystem accounting focuses on assessment of the contribution of ecosystem in generating benefits for human well-being.

Bij veel onderzoeksvragen bij het Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving en Wageningen UR spelen ontbossing en bosbouw een belangrijke rol. Om de effecten te analyseren voor grondgebruik van het beleid voor biobrandstoffen, landbouw of handel wordt vaak het algemene evenwichtsmodel MAGNET van LEI Wageningen UR gebruikt. Een van de sterke kanten van dit model van de wereldeconomie is de aandacht voor grondaanbod. Recent is een nieuwe benadering voor de dynamiek van de grondmarkt en de rol van bosbouw ontwikkeld.

Contesting Control: Land and Forest in the Struggle for Loita Maasai Self-government in Kenya

Het beleid van de agrarische sector is gericht op het versterken van de marktpositie, concurrentiekracht, innovatievermogen en duurzaamheid. De vraag is in welke mate de realisatie van beleidsdoelen afhankelijk is van het tempo van schaalvergroting in de grondgeboden agrarische sectoren

Herstel en duurzaam beheer van biodiversiteit en ecosysteemdiensten worden steeds meer geïntegreerd in nationaal en internationaal beleid. In dit proefschrift wordt een methodologie ontwikkeld voor de kwantificering van effecten van landmanagement op de ruimtelijke verspreiding van ecosysteemdiensten, zodat de door landmanagement veroorzaakte trade-offs tussen ecosysteemdiensten bepaald kunnen worden voor zowel lokale ecosystemen en landschappen als regionale en mondiale biomen. Een groot aantal ecosysteemdiensten zijn bestudeerd.

Stichting Behoud Erfgoed Oirschot (SBEO) heeft zich ten doel gesteld om de open en bolle akkercomplexen rond Oirschot te beschermingen in het licht van huidig en toekomstig landgebruik. De rol van de boomteelt is voor SBEO een belangrijk onderdeel van dit vraagstuk omdat deze sector rond Oirschot veel aanwezig is en mogelijk cultuurhistorische waarden kan aantasten door verandering van de openheid en mogelijke afvoer van grond na de oogst van de bomen.

In contrast to their sedentary image, farmers in Central and South Mali are surprisingly mobile. Many have settled in scattered farming hamlets where they are rapidly expanding the areas under agriculture. This study focuses on farmers’ mobility in relation to accessing land in two regions in Mali where farming conditions are very different regarding rainfall, population growth and opportunities for income generation. It is shown that differences in farming conditions in the two regions have shaped the different temporal and spatial dimensions of farmers’ mobility.

This thesis deals with the politicized struggles for land in South Africa’s Limpopo Province. With land having been an essential part of colonial and apartheid segregation policies and practice – with 87% of land appropriated by whites –, a land reform programme was imperative after the African National Congress came to power in 1994. One of the three branches of the land reform programme, land restitution, is a key focus of this thesis.

Vegetation degradation and desertification occur in many semiarid ecosystems worldwide, particularly in the Western Mediterranean Basin. A peculiar semiarid Mediterranean land use system dominates the landscape of southern Portugal where cork oak (Quercus suber) is the main tree species.

De realisatie van de Ecologische Hoofdstructuur in de Provincie Noord-Holland ligt achter op schema. Hierom hebben Gedeputeerde Staten van Noord-Holland besloten te onderzoeken of via een herbegrenzing een groter deel van de EHS nog is te realiseren. De gebieden die in aanmerking komen voor herbegrenzing zijn beoordeeld op de ruimtelijke samenhang van het gebied zelf én de mate waarin het gebied bijdraagt aan de omgeving. Op basis van de analyses mag geconcludeerd worden dat de beoogde herbegrenzing in Noord-Holland goed is voor de ruimtelijke samenhang van de provinciale EHS.

This report aims to give a complete and transparent overview and motivation of all steps involved in the construction of the land use and land use change matrix used for the UNFCCC submission 2009 for LULUCF and onwards. For the 2009 submission to the UNFCCC the land use change matrix was updated and based on an improved wall-to-wall approach derived from topographical maps. Updates in methodology and data sets were included in order to present the best estimate of land use and land use change in The Netherlands that is currently possible.
