PLAAS was founded in 1995 as a specialist unit in the School of Government, Economic and Management Sciences Faculty at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Cape Town.

O Movimento de Luta nos Bairros, Vilas e Favelas (MLB) é um movimento social nacional que luta pela reforma urbana e pelo socialismo e envolve milhares de famílias pobres em todo o país.
