This publication, provides, in an internationally comparable form, a summary of data describing the main characteristics of agricultural structures, such as number and area of agricultural holdings, land tenure, agricultural holders and land use for 80 countries.

The China Forest Tenure Project was implemented by the State Forest Administration (SFA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). An appreciation of the lessons learned from the project requires an understanding of the context in which it operated. For that purpose, a brief sketch of the history of tenure reform in China is presented here, followed by a discussion of the tenure process and background information on policy and regulatory constraints.

Land and forest tenure systems greatly influence a country’s ability to reduce deforestation and forest degradation. Clear and legitimate tenure rights over forests can provide an incentive to manage forests sustainably and simultaneously reduce deforestation and forest degradation. In fact, communities and stakeholders with secure tenure rights have a strong interest in investing time and resources to maintain and enhance the natural capital under a long-term vision.

This FAO Legal Paper is the overall synopsis of a series of legal assessment reports that evaluate the laws and policies in the land, forestry and fisheries sectors in Sierra Leone and make recommendations to align them with the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT), which were endorsed by the Committee on World Food Security in May 2012.

This guide is about extending the recording or registration of tenure rights to people who currently are not served by systems to record their rights. It provides practical advice on ways to introduce a new system to record tenure rights and for the recording of rights for the first time by the state, a process that is sometimes called first registration.

The leaflet will provide an overview of in-country projects and achevements as well as regional initiatives. Articles include but are not limited to: Community lands at the core of Kenya’s new legal reforms; The Voluntary Guidelines: an instrumental tool in the pursuit of climate mitigation goals and REDD+; Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure: an opportunity for peacebuilding in Colombia; Strengthening collaboration for the successful implementation of Sierra Leone’s Na tional Land Policy ; Enhancing food security through land policy reform in Somalia.

The case-study presents the case of the appropriation of pastoral lands by the coming of large-scale extractive industries in Turkana, Kenya. The case-study is meant to raise awareness among the general audience regarding the precarious situation of the pastoralists in the context of this new socio-economic development and lack of secure land tenure. At the same time, it provides this information as a case to local and global civil society, experts, institutions and policy makers.
