Conventional notions of the ‘land parcel’ have been extended: previously unrecognized tenures including customary, nomadic, or communal interests are now incorporated into the concept. Technical tools including the Social Tenure Domain Model (STDM) enable these new understandings to be operationalized in land administration systems. The nomadic pastoralists of Kenya’s dry land regions illustrate where these new approaches can be applied.

In the year 2014, the PP has recorded great achievements in terms of revised outcomes. Some unique and strategic approaches employed by the PP are partly the reason for the achievements. This brief is a summary of the key achievements made and the strategies or approaches used in 2014. 

Tanzania Natural Resource Forum in partnership with Care international implements a five years pastoralist programme (2012-2016) through registered Tanzanian Civil society Organizations (CSOs) and/or Community Based Organizations (CBOs) that work to improve the capacity of communities to overcome poverty, reduce vulnerability and strengthen the rights of men and women for sustainable livelihoods. This brief covers some highlights for 2013.

The former Soviet Central Asian republics have undergone de-intensification of their livestock sectors, resulting in an increased reliance on natural pastures. Property rights systems are key to the sustainable management of this resource. However, as the authors demonstrate, it is not easy to implement the respective reform processes.

Pastoralism – the predominant form of livestock keeping in the Horn of Africa – has always been a source of disputes and tensions in the region. So it is maybe no coincidence that precisely those countries with the largest cattle and camel herds should be the ones that have been suffering from prolonged armed conflict for years. This article takes a look at the closely interwoven aspects influencing conflicts in the Horn of Africa in general and South Sudan more specifically.

Formal land titles are rare in pastoral communities around the world. In the past, this presented hardly any problems, since pastoral land was seen as of little use by most outsiders. But with growing competition for areas legal uncertainty is becoming an increasing threat to the livelihoods of pastoralists.

Le modèle Nexus « Gah Kêssê » est une approche holistique visant à soutenir les systèmes agropastoraux localement et compensant les pertes liées à la réduction de la mobilité. Le modèle a été conçu, testé et analysé par la Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH pour le compte du Ministère Fédéral de la Coopération Economique et du Développement (BMZ) au sein du Projet global de la promotion d’une politique foncière responsable (ProPFR) et du module pays Bénin.

Cet article aborde les tensions engendrées par les mouvements des troupeaux des éleveurs nomades et la compétition autour des ressources naturelles. Nous étudions le cas des éleveurs nomades (kassâba) sahariens originaires du Sud-ouest marocain dans leur mobilité à la recherche des pâturages dans la région du Souss. Les déplacements de ces kassâba provoquent une situation conflictuelle entre les éleveurs d’une part et la population locale villageoise et montagnarde d’autre part.
