Urochloa humidicola breeding: Selection based on hybrid performance in multi-environmental trial on Bh22 population

December, 2022
Global

In 2022, a new cohort of U. humidicola hybrids was obtained and named Bh22. This cohort was composed of 5,024 hybrids and corresponded to the 3rd cycle of recurrent selection. Out of 5,024 individuals tested, 1,887 were identified as apomicts through the molecular marker p779/p780 (Worthington, 2016). In 2023, with the objective to select i) a subset of genotypes based on their performance and ii) mothers based on hybrid performance, a multi-environment trial was implemented.

Gender equality and women’s empowerment in rural transformation: From evidence to public action

December, 2022
India

The slow, limited, and uneven progress on women’s empowerment and gender equality over the last decade clearly shows that rural transformation, with its focus on efficiency and productivity, is leaving women behind in addition to having negative impacts on the environment and nutrition. New inclusive models of rural transformation are called for. The study argues that treating gender equality and women’s empowerment as key in the process of rural transformation will lead to a more inclusive and resilient transformation of rural spaces.

Socio-Technical Innovation Bundles (STIBs) for women’s empowerment and resilience in the agrifood system

December, 2022
Global

The Socio-Technical Innovation Bundles (STIBs) framework, developed by the CGIAR's Initiative on Gender Equality, in collaboration with the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), offers a systematic approach to enhance women's empowerment and resilience in the agrifood system by addressing gender-specific barriers and challenges, combining technological and social innovations in a demand-driven and context-specific manner.

December, 2022
Global

The Nubian Flapshell Turtle, Cyclanorbis elegans, is classified as one of the most threatened chelonian species globally (Critically Endangered according to the IUCN Red List). The species is presumed extinct in most of its historical distribution range, but still survives along the White Nile between South Sudan and northern Uganda.

Mainstreaming women farmers: Innovations and approach

Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Security: Concept, Datasets and Opportunities for Computational Social Science Applications

December, 2022
Global

Ensuring food and nutritional security requires effective policy actions that consider the multitude of direct and indirect drivers. The limitations of data and tools to unravel complex impact pathways to nutritional outcomes have constrained efficient policy actions in both developed and developing countries. Novel digital data sources and innovations in computational social science have resulted in new opportunities for understanding complex challenges and deriving policy outcomes.

Gain and performance in yield and micronutrient concentration in common bean improvement

December, 2022
Global

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a staple and nutritious leguminous food crop for all income categories in Africa. Efforts to improve its yield performance and nutritional components, especially Iron and zinc have resulted in the release of several varieties in the sub-Saharan African region. The objective of this study was to assess genetic progress in varieties released in 12 African countries through the Pan African Bean Research Alliance (PABRA) from 1973 to 2017, to inform current breeding decisions.

Identification of suitable land for supplemental surface irrigation in semi-arid areas of North-western Ethiopia

December, 2022
Ethiopia

In arid and semi-arid areas, a shortage of soil moisture limits rainfed crop growth and consequently reduces crop yield. By adding a small amount of water, supplemental irrigation can boost crop yields dramatically. The objective of this study was to identify suitable land for supplemental irrigation in a moisture deficit area in the semi-arid Ethiopian highlands using GIS-based multi-criteria evaluation. Land suitability and water availability factors were used for the analysis.

Cassava flour processors in Democratic Republic of Congo have increased their production capacity, incomes, and profitability by using the Efficient Small-scale Flash Dryer innovation

December, 2022
Global

An efficient small-scale flash drying technology was scaled out from 2019 to 2022 by the CGIAR team CIAT-CIRAD-IITA. The innovation was adopted by 5 cassava flour processors and 1 equipment manufacturers from D.R. Congo. This flash drying innovation package has positively impacted the environment and considerably increased the profitability of cassava processing, as the processors doubled to tripled their production capacity, and cut their fuel consumption per ton of cassava flour produced by 30 to 50%.
