Timely identification of agricultural crops in the Temelin NPP vicinity using satellite data in the event of radiation contamination
This study established the possibility of rapid evaluation of land cover structure and situation using as an example the Temelin Nuclear Power Plant (Czech Republic) emergency zone. The composition, surface representation and spatial distribution of crop species in the area of interest were assessed on the basis of satellite data analysis (Landsat 5 TM). The supervised classification method of Landsat data yielded 92% accuracy of classification into the land cover classes.
Analysis of rural landscape structure use in Southern Lithuania
Rural landscape of the southern part of Lithuania as well as its use is analysed in the article. The defects of land reclamation system cause the rise of deserted lands. Dampness and bagged up soils are a large obstacle for the proper use of deserted lands. One more reason is lands of low productivity. The third reason of the rise of deserted lands is the shortage and default of perspective farmers and agricultural companies who are able to lease and cultivate land.
Calculus of variations and its application to division of forest land
The paper deals with an application of the least squares method (LSM) for the purposes of division and evaluation of land. This method can be used in all cases with redundant number of measurements. The traditional procedure of calculus of variations with the use of Lagrangian function is shown. If some additional conditions are included in the calculation, it is possible to evaluate the degree of deformation of the selected solution in relation to the measured quantities.
Land use/cover survey in Slovak Republic in 2006
The present paper gives an overview of the survey of LUCAS points in Slovakia. The Land Use/Cover Area frame Statistical survey was designed to collect agricultural, environmental data and photographs by field observation of a specific geographically referenced point. LUCAS 2006 survey in the Slovak Republic was carried out by a Soil Science and Conservation Research Institute (SSCRI).The survey of 3 392 points was organized from the 21st of March till 16th of July. The measurements were carried out by 7teams (in pairs). All points had to be visited, measured with GPS and documented.
Justice and sustainability: resistance and innovation in a transnational land deal in Ghana
This paper examines the case of a Nordic appropriation of land through a lease agreement with chiefs in southern Ghana, initially for biofuel production and then for large-scale, mechanized food production. The production shift triggered resistance over loss of land and environmental impact, and threatened to destabilize the project. This enticed the company to innovate through improving cooperation and offering compensation to individuals who lost land.
Pro-poor growth in agriculture and the land question in Malawi
Malawi has pursued an agricultural-led development strategy since its Independence in 1964. This agricultural-led development strategy was based on the promotion of a dual agricultural system comprising estate (large-scale) production mainly for cash (export) crops and smallholder agricultural production mainly to support the food security needs of the population. After four decades of agricultural-led development strategies in post-Independence Malawi, economic growth has been erratic and a large proportion of the population lives below the poverty line.
The global supply and demand for agricultural land in 2050: a perfect storm in the making?
The number of people which the world must feed is expected to increase by 50% during the first half of this century, but will the world’s agricultural resource base be up to the task of meeting the diverse demands being placed on it?
The Makuleke Land Claim: power relations and Community-Based Natural Resource Management
The article investigates the power relations that emerged around a CBNRM programme and a land claim by the Makuleke community of the Northern Transvaal Province of South Africa. The land from which the Makuleke were forcibly removed in 1969 was incorporated into the Kruger National Park. Under post-apartheid land tenure reform legislation the community was now able to reclaim the land that they had lost. This paper describes the process of bargaining that took place between the community and the National Park authorities.
Land market development in the Czech Republic
A sample of 24 districts (1/3 of the Czech Republic) was used to evaluate the land market. Land prices depended on the area, culture and region of the plot. Sales of small plots (up to 1 ha) prevailed. These plots were usually purchased for non-agricultural use and their prices were many times higher than prices of large plots (above 5 ha) which are usually bought for agricultural purpose. Land market is not well developed, only 0.2-0.4% of the monitored area was sold each year. Compared with land prices in the west EU countries, land market prices in the Czech Republic are low.
Convergence process of agricultural land structures in the European Union
Economic development is associated with changes in the use of available production factors, including land. Under the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union, land resources are no longer only a factor of agricultural production but they have become also a source of public goods. The aim of this article is to identify whether convergence processes in the development of agricultural land structures in the EU-25 take place in connection with the functioning of agriculture in the EU Member States under the CAP.
