The National Programme on Forests 2004-2007 (PNF) aims to promote the balanced and sustainable use and conservation of Brazilian forests. This will be done through the articulation of public policies related to issues such as: land tenure, credit and financing, environmental legislation, research and technology, training and capacity building, etc. This interministerial programme provides incentive instruments to good use of natural resources and will broaden experiences that prove to be perfectly possible and necessary to grow with respect to the natural balance. The PNF will be implemented with the involvement of various sectors of government and society, represented in the Coordinating Committee of this National Programme (Conaflor).Through expanding the area of managed forests, associated with local protection with great ecological value, the PNF aims to promote the conservation and sustainable use, reducing deforestation rates. This will meet the demand of settlers and traditional/indigenous populations (in particular rubber tappers) to the use of forests as a source of employment and income. It will also supply the forestry industry with raw materials coming from managed areas. The National Programme will harmonize forestry policies with a number of other public policies, promoting the expansion of domestic and foreign markets and also the institutional development of the sector, spreading the management both for companies and for small farmers. The National Programme will promote Silvo-forestry and Agroforestry Systems for Family Agriculture (Pronaf Florestal) meeting the demand of small Brazilian forest producers, both natural forests and planted.
