Iraq's marshes, drained by Saddam, named world heritage site

A wetland in southeast Iraq, thought to be the biblical Garden of Eden and almost completely drained during Saddam Hussein's rule, has become a UNESCO world heritage site, Iraqi authorities said on Sunday.

[From The Guardian] In February, after a legal battle lasting nearly two decades, little-known indigenous communities in Ecuador's Amazon region won a multi-billion dollar landmark ruling against the oil giant Chevron. The company was accused of polluting a large part of the Amazon basin by dumping billions of litres of chemical-laden materials, which campaigners said destroyed crops, killed livestock and increased cancer rates among the local population.

Deux morts et vingtaine de blessés, c'est le bilan des heurts qui ont opposé le mercredi 26 octobre 2011, les habitants de la communauté rurale de Fanaye, dans la vallée du fleuve Sénégal. Les habitants se sont divisés autour d'un projet privé de biocarburant. Partisans et adversaires se sont retrouvés face à face armés de bâtons et d'armes artisanales. A l'origine de ces violences : 20 000 hectares de terres cédés à des investisseurs italiens sans que la population n'ait été véritablement consultée.

Bangkok's City Planning Department will allow the transfer of development rights and give additional construction space to buildings that remove fences for public use. The move is aimed at encouraging land utilisation and improving the city's liveability.
Forêts : un film sur les dégâts de l’exploitation dans le bassin du Congo
L’exploitation forestière des Français dans le bassin du Congo, deuxième massif de forêts tropicales humides au monde, provoque d’importants dégâts dont témoigne un film documentaire réalisé par l’ONG les Amis de la Terre et rendu public jeudi sur leur site. Les Amis de la Terre ont conduit une mission dans plusieurs sites d’exploitation du Cameroun et du Congo -Eboumetoum, Mindourou, Dimako, Yokadouma- pour raconter "la face cachée de l’exploitation forestière" notamment par les sociétés françaises Pallisco et Rougier.
