An indigenous leader leading his people’s effort to reclaim ancestral land in Costa Rica has been wounded in a gun attack – the latest in a spate of targeted violence which has gone unpunished by authorities.

Mainor Ortiz Delgado, 29, a leader of the Bribri indigenous people in Salitre, Puntarenas province, was shot in the right leg earlier this month – the third time Ortiz has been shot allegedly by members of the same family in 14 months.

The Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Benito Owusu-Bio, has launched a project which will ensure the reforestation of 300 hectares of degraded land for sustainable energy wood production and rehabilitation of 700 hectares of degraded natural forest in the Kintampo Municipality of the Bono East Region.

Dubbed: "Forest Landscape Restoration through a sustainable wood energy value chain," the €4.5 million German government-sponsored project also aims at introducing energy-efficient technologies for charcoal production and cooking stoves in the area.

ENTEBBE – IGN FI, a world leader and a major international player in the field of geometry, will present the results of the NLIS (National Land Information System) project to the media and stakeholders from more than 34 countries in Africa and the world.

The Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Nathaniel Blama, has said that encroachments and pollution of wetlands in the city of Monrovia and its environs presents a severe environmental threat.

According to Mr. Blama, this unfortunate situation may lead the city down a path of disaster with huge consequences if nothing is done to halt the encroachments on the wetlands.
