Eastern and Central Africa Programme for Agricultural Policy Analysis

ECAPAPA

The stated aim of Eastern and Central Africa Programme for Agricultural Policy Analysis (ECAPAPA) is to promote regional economic growth through application of growth-enhancing agricultural policies and, in the process, to help build a sustainable capacity in eastern and central Africa to utilise and contribute to agricultural policy research and analysis.

To accomplish its objectives and contribute to the overall goal, the Programme has three specific tasks:

  • capacity building primarily directed towards the National Agricultural Research Institutes, to increase their ability to affect policy and to relate their technology development programmes to existing policy
  • to improve regional agricultural policy through supporting policy analysis in selected thematic areas
  • to support a network among interest groups, policy analysts and decision-makers to coordinate and link agricultural policy activities in the region.

Their website contains details of all their activities and partners and contains a small library of their own publications.

Economic and Social Research Foundation of Tanzania

ESRF

The Economic and Social Research Foundation was established in 1994 as an independent, not-for-profit institution for research and policy analysis.

The formation of ESRF was based on the assumption that there was need and demand for an improved understanding of policy options and development management issues, and that the capacity for this was lacking in the Tanzania civil service.

ESRF addressed this gap by putting into place qualified Professional Staff, modest resources and a favourable research environment for the analysis and discussion of economic and social policy.

The primary objectives of the Foundation are to strengthen capabilities in policy analysis and development management and to enhance the understanding of policy options in the government, the public sector, civil society, and the donor community and the growing private sector

EDL Initiative

The Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative is an initiative on the economic benefits of land and land based ecosystems. The initiative highlights the value of sustainable land management and provides a global approach for analysis of the economics of land degradation. It aims to make economics of land degradation an integral part of policy strategies and decision making by increasing the political and public awareness of the costs and benefits of land and land-based ecosystems.

Our Vision

The partners’ vision of Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative is to transform global understanding of the value of land and create awareness of the economic case for sustainable land management that prevents loss of natural capital, secures livelihoods, preserves ecosystem services, combats climate change, and addresses food, energy, and water security, and to create capacity for the utilisation of economic information for sustainable land management.

Mission Statement

The central purpose and role of the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative is that through an open inter-disciplinary partnership:

  • We work on the basis of a holistic framework built upon a recognized methodology to include the economic benefits of sustainable land management in political decision-making;

  • We build a compelling economic case for the benefits derived from sustainable land management from the local to the global level while applying a multi-level approach;

  • We estimate quantitatively the economic benefits derived from adopting sustainable land management practices and compare them to the costs of these practices;

  • We develop the capacities of decision-makers and land users through innovative formats to adapt and build their knowledge into national frameworks and action on the ground;

  • We stimulate the transformation towards land uses that provide fulfilling and secure livelihoods to all while growing natural capital, enhancing ecosystem services, boosting resilience and combating climate change;

  • We increase the awareness of the total value of land with its related ecosystem services;

  • We mainstream the full benefits of land in international and national land use strategies and action programmes by proposing effective solutions, tailored to country- or region-specific needs, including policies, and activities to reduce land degradation, mitigate climate change and the loss of biodiversity, and deliver food, energy, and water security worldwide.

Edward Elgar Publishing

EEP

Edward Elgar Publishing is a leading international academic and professional publisher with a strong focus on the social sciences and legal fields. We publish 350 titles annually and have successfully created a prestigious list of over 5,500 titles.

The company was founded by our current Chairman, Edward Elgar, and remains a family business. Edward's original vision was to create a publishing house that attracted high quality books by offering a superior service to authors and we remain focused on treating potential authors and their books with care and attention to detail. We believe it is difficult for large corporate publishers who often suffer from very high levels of staff turnover, top down management and mass production processes to replicate the experience we can provide.

Edward Elgar Publishing was conceived as an international scholarly press and from the beginning our sales were derived equally from Europe, North America and Asia Pacific regions, reflecting our author base and focus on topics of global interest. Today the Middle East, Latin America and a number of African countries are also important markets.

Our offices are located in the UK (in the Regency town of Cheltenham and Camberley near London) and the US (in Northampton, Massachusetts).  Our editors and sales team make frequent visits to universities and conferences, both home and abroad, meeting with some 20,000 scholars each year to learn about their plans and identify academic trends and ideas for new titles that would be of benefit to our readers.

The support can take the form of awareness raising among Europeans, fundraising, participating in activities on site and supporting projects. Ekta Parishad

Ekta Parishad is a non-violent Gandhi-inspired social movement in India working on land and forest rights at a national level. It has been built up over the last twenty years growing from the local, to the state, to the national and increasingly, to the international level. The purpose of mobilizing an increasingly growing, very large group of poor people into a loosely structured, major grassroots movement, has been to put pressure directly on central and state government bodies in order to press for legal reforms and structural change.

The structural change that Ekta Parishad is calling for is a profound land reform to enable the marginalized and poorest segments of society to get out of poverty. Land reform – giving the poor access to land is a ‘game changer’ that could bring 40% of the populace out of absolute poverty and substantially reduce the violence that is increasingly threatening Indian society. Violence, that is fueled by naxalite, marxist groups who draw on the misery of people to exert control and to use aggressive means in confronting government, leading to police repression and a climate of fear and violence. Please visit www.ektaparishad.com for further information.

Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária

Embrapa
