Last 25-26 October 2010, the Association for Land Reform and Rural Development (ALRD), the Asian NGO Coalition for Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (ANGOC) and the International Land Coalition (ILC) jointly organised this Regional Workshop on Women and Land Rights, as a response to the urgent need to cast the spotlight on women and their access to and ownership of land. The objectives of the workshop were identifying strategic areas and developing a road map for 2011-2012, to strengthen ILC Asia’s work on women’s land rights.

This document contains the Policy Framework for Pastoralism in Africa, which was drafted by the Department of Rural Economy and Agriculture of the African Union Commission. The document reflects a continent-wide policy initiative which aims to secure, protect and improve the lives, livelihoods and rights of African pastoralists.The framework explicitly recognizes the rights of pastoralists and the need to provide security, services, infrastructure and economic opportunities in pastoral areas which are comparable to non-pastoral areas.

Draws on fieldwork and data from authors’ edited volume on Women’s Land Rights and Privatization in Eastern Africa and a collection of papers edited for the Journal of Eastern African Studies. Authors have developed a positive, pragmatic and innovative approach to securing land rights for women grounded in gender equity. 3 key themes: the role of customary institutions in securing women’s land rights; the continuing central role of legislation as a foundation for changing custom; the challenges of reform implementation and of building women’s confidence to claim their rights.

Em  meados  do  ano  2006  o  Centro  de  Formação  Jurídica  e  Judiciária  (CFJJ)  lançou  o projecto de pesquisa sobre “Protecção Jurídica dos Direitos de Uso e Aproveitamento da Terra  das  Comunidades  Locais”  com  o  apoio  financeiro  da  DANIDA.  O  projecto  de pesquisa  contou  ainda  com  sinergias  logísticas  e  técnicas  do  Projecto  “Apoio  Jurídico Descentralizado e Capacitação para a Promoção do Desenvolvimento Sustentável e Boa Governação  a  Nível  Local”,  implementado  pelo  CFJJ  com  o  apoio  técnico  da  FAO  e apoio financeiro do Governo do Rei

Includes official land rights in Kenya; refusing inheritance – widows and daughters in the patrilineage, dispute trajectories; institutionalizing women’s exclusion – local control boards, local dispute tribunals, formal courts; shifting the debate; working with constructive values in this context. The problem needs to be tackled using the avenues that currently promote the marginalization of women; the socio-cultural value systems that determine which behaviour, arguments, and actions are legitimate in a community.

L'arbre de karité pousse à l'état sauvage dans de vastes parties de l'Afrique de l'Ouest. Cet arbre aux exigences modestes se contente de peu d'eau et protège le sol contre l'érosion. Depuis toujours les femmes utilisent les amandes oléagineuses pour fabriquer de l'huile et du beurre utilisés pour la cuisson et à des fins cosmétiques. Elles vendent également les produits tirés de la noix de karité sur les marchés locaux.

Moçambique é um dos bons exemplos dos países Africanos que têm desenvolvido metodologias de delimitação das comunidades rurais e tem estado a implementar com sucesso a sua reforma da lei de terra. A nova lei de terra em Moçambique surgiu em 1997 e desde então um número significativo de comunidades rurais reforçou o seu direito de uso e aproveitamento da terra. Este é uma vitória, um marco social e histórico, digno de registo e apreciação, jamais visto na história contemporânea, desde a Conferência de Berlim onde o continente africano foi divido para melhor ocupar e governar.
