Summarises past and present experiences with livestock performance testing in sub-Saharan Africa and outlines the role of networks in improving on-farm testing through the use of standardised testing methods and rapid data handling and feedback. Includes data on the distribution of cattle and sheep populations by ecological zone in sub-Saharan Africa. Presents current programmes for on-farm and on-station performance recording.

This volume presents major results obtained since the publication of volume 1 and 2 and updates national data on trypanotolerant cattle. The first part analyses populations and their trends between the two surveys and reviews research activities and development activities. It also gives recent information available on the potential and utilisation of trypanotolerant livestock. Part two presents recent data for the 18 study countries, as well as for Equatorial Guinea which was not covered in volume 2.

This study is carried out in semi-arid to arid Karkheh Basin of Iran, where massive water allocation planning is on the way, but a comprehensive knowledge on basin

hydrology and impact of these developments on different water uses and users across the basin are lacking.

Sustainable development of pastoral and agro-pastoral systems, dominated by collective and/or tribal ownership of rangelands, is a key issue for the West Asia and North Africa region. These two systems are located in arid and semi-arid areas and are increasingly threatened by desertification process. The policy responses to tackle this complexity have been a sectorial and fragmented, “top-down” approach, putting forward technical solutions and neglecting the social context.

The Kuri cattle breed is found on the shores and islands of Lake Chad. Its main habitat is in southern Chad and north-eastern Nigeria but the breed is also found in northern Cameroon, in Niger and, to a limited extent, in the Central African Republic. The Kuri are also known as the Baharie, Bare, Borrie, Boudouma, Dongolé, Koubouri, Buduma or White Lake Chad. The importance of the Kuri lies not only in its unique physical characteristics but also in its meat and milk production potentials. The breed is so acclimatised to the environs of Lake Chad that it is unable to survive elsewhere.

Presents a theoritical outline of the techniques in the use of tritiated water (HTO) which can be used to estimate total body water, body composition, water turnover, milk intake and feed intake. Highlights its potential errors and gives a comprehensive methodology for the use of tritiated water under field conditions.
