WASHINGTON, June 26, 2020 – Around 750,000 people are expected to gain improved land tenure security and stable property rights through a new project that will facilitate land titles for over 1.3 million hectares of land that was granted as part of the Philippines’ Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP).

Some workers and business owners have banded together to pressure companies or local governments for subsidies and payouts.

But many of the newly unemployed have instead returned to their rural villages. China's vast countryside now serves as an unemployment sponge, soaking up floating migrant workers in temporary agricultural work on small family plots.

FG to partner states in wooing 77,400 people into agriculture

The National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) says it has made plans to help 77,400 people set up farms.

According to the agency, the farmers would be drawn from across the 774 local governments areas of the country.

NALDA was created by Ibrahim Babangida, a former military ruler, in 1992 through decree No.92 but in 2000 it was abolished by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

President Muhammadu Buhari resuscitated the agency in May.

FPDA partners with SHP to grow potato

The Fresh Produce Development Agency has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Southern Highlands Provincial Government to collaborate and promote agriculture in Southern Highlands Province.

The partnership is for three years at a cost of K3 million which will see FPDA providing technical assistance and mobilizing farmers to use their land and prioritized farming especially potatoes. 

20 Hectares of Land Allocated for Farmers

A Twenty-hectare plot of land in Erap has been allocated by the Division of Agriculture and Livestock to address Covid-19 food security through partnerships with other stakeholders.

The project is in response to a call by the provincial emergency centre supported by the Australian High Commission Consulate, Lae Chamber of Commerce and Lae City Authority to provide planting materials to farmers in the province. 

Olam secures a US$176 million term loan from IFC and JICA

Global food and agri-business Olam International Limited and its wholly owned subsidiary, Olam Treasury Pte. Ltd. (“OTPL”), have secured multi-tranche financing facilities (the “Facilities”) aggregating US$176.0 million from the International Finance Corporation (“IFC”) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (“JICA”). 

The Facilities consist of two tranches – a 5-year term loan of US$120.0 million and a 7-year term loan of US$56.0 million. 

Pangilinan urges gov’t to use Landbank, other institutions in disbursement of aid to farmers

Opposition Senator Francis N. Pangilinan today suggested that the government fast-track the release of financial aid to quarantine-affected farmers by decentralizing disbursement from Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP).

The fifth report of Malacanang to Congress submitted last April 27 showed that the financial subsidy to rice farmers (FSRF) of the Department of Agriculture (DA) reached only 53,881 (or 9.11 percent) out of 591,246 targeted farmers, and P645 million of FSRF’s P3 billion has been utilized.

Setbacks hit Volta’s 1D1F- Land disputes, funding issues rank high

In a bid to create avenues of job creation for Ghana’s teeming unemployed youth, the government through its numerous policies, programmes and initiatives instituted the ‘one district, one factory’ programme to be implemented in the various districts of the Volta Region.

The programme is also intended to provide opportunities for the private sector to cash in by setting up factories and industries using indigenous raw materials and also making use of local labour as a way of creating employment.
