More than 19 mln people can face food insecurity in west, central Africa: Report

People more likely to die of starvation caused by the economic fallout of COVID-19 pandemic than the disease itself, says the report

West and central Africa are staring at an unprecedented hunger crisis: At least 19 million people could face food insecurity between June and August 2020, due to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

The findings by Action Against Hunger, a global humanitarian organisation, noted that people were more likely to die of starvation caused by the economic fallout of the pandemic than the disease itself.

Last year the world lost some 119,000 square kilometers (45,946 square miles) of tree cover – an area the size of Nicaragua – according to satellite data collated by the University of Maryland (UMD) released today by World Resources Institute (WRI). Almost a third of that loss – or an area the size of Switzerland – came from primary humid tropical forests, which house most of the planet’s plant and animal species and play an important role in climate regulation.


Continued interest in LAND-at-scale during COVID-19 crisis

The LAND-at-scale programme got a great response to the second call for ideas. The programme received 25 new ideas from 19 different countries. Support continues for enhancing land governance and tenure security. This is evident in the response and effort from embassies, NGOs and knowledge institutes.

Current LAND-at-scale portfolio status

In October 2019, approval was given to 13 promising ideas. LAND-at-scale has been working closely with embassies, knowledge institutes and NGOs to transform these ideas into land governance projects.

Namibia urged to implement policy on climate change

One of the many recommendations made by President Hage Geingob’s High-Level Panel on the Namibian Economy (HLPE) is that Namibia implements its comprehensive national policy on climate change released in 2011. 

The goal of the national policy on climate change is to contribute to the attainment of sustainable development in line with Namibia’s Vision 2030, through strengthening national capacities to reduce climate change risk and build resilience for any climate change shocks.
