The National Programme on Forests 2004-2007 (PNF) aims to promote the balanced and sustainable use and conservation of Brazilian forests. This will be done through the articulation of public policies related to issues such as: land tenure, credit and financing, environmental legislation, research and technology, training and capacity building, etc. This interministerial programme provides incentive instruments to good use of natural resources and will broaden experiences that prove to be perfectly possible and necessary to grow with respect to the natural balance.

The overall objective of the present National Forest Policy is the conservation, protection, management and utilisation of the nation’s forest resources, while ensuring that the productive capacity of the forests for both goods and services is maintained or enhanced.
The main objective of the present Forest Policy is enhancing the contribution of the forests to the national economy and the welfare of the current and future generations, taking into account the preservation of the biodiversity. Three goals of equal weight are contained in the main objective, namely: 1) Economic goal: Forests will be used efficiently and in a sustainable manner in order to enhance the contribution of the sector to the national economy, including foreign currency, government income, and employment.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) affects more than 3.5 people in the developing world. More than half of pregnant women (56 percent) and 44 percent of nonpregnant women are anemic (ACC/SCN 2000). IDA contributes to approximately 20 percent of maternal deaths in Africa and Asia (Ross and Thomas 1996). In Africa alone, some 20,000 maternal deaths per year could be prevented with anemia treatment.
