La sostenibilidad es un factor medular del nuevo Marco Estratégico de la FAO, y es el foco específico del Objetivo Estratégico 2, consistente en un aumento sostenible del suministro de bienes y servicios de la agricultura, la actividad forestal y la pesca. El presente informe es el fruto de un proceso intensivo de consultas y debates encaminados a elaborar un enfoque común para la labor realizada por la FAO en materia de sostenibilidad.

FAO opened the Nigeria Representation Office in 1978, and has since provided unabated support to the country in the formulation and implementation of policies, strategies, programmes and projects in food, agriculture and natural resources. The cooperation aims to improve food security and nutrition and reduce poverty in a broad-based, equitable and sustainable manner. In providing this assistance, FAO has always focused on enhancing the livelihood of smallholders, who form the bulk of the rural poor, in a way that is technically, economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.

In this issue, we look at a new publication entitled â¿¿Payments for ecosystem services and food securityâ¿¿. This document was produced as part of preparatory process for FAOâ¿¿s participation in the Rio+20 event to be held in 2012. We also look ahead to World Water Week to be held 21-27 August in Stockholm, Sweden, where FAO will participate in a seminar anticipating the theme of 2012â¿¿s World Water Day â¿¿ Water and Food Security.

Land Tenure Working Paper 19. The present paper is written as part of the overall Voluntary Guidelines consultation and development process and is a contribution to the subsequent preparation of the Gender Technical Guide. It contextualises and defines gender for the Voluntary Guidelines, discusses what governance of tenure means from a gender perspective and identifies and analyses key issues and themes. It then summarises recommendations relevant to gender before drawing some conclusions for the development process of the Voluntary Guidelines.

Cooperation between Nauru and FAO has been ongoing since the Pacific Island Country joined the Organization in 2001. Over the past 14 years, FAO assistance has focused on supporting local food production to achieve improved health, food security and sustainable agricultural development. FAO interventions include strengthening of capacities in sustainable natural resource management, particularly in the face of climate change.

Considerando la necesidad de implementar acciones que promuevan el manejo sostenible del suelo, principalmente en contextos donde la degradación constituye una amenaza que impacta negativamente a comunidades rurales, la FAO a través del Secretariado de la Alianza Mundial por el Suelo (AMS) estableció la Alianza Latinoamericana por el Suelo en el año 2012 en el marco del Congreso Latinoamericano de Suelos.
