This document from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) highlights the severe humanitarian crisis in Sudan, characterized by acute malnutrition, disease outbreaks, and widespread displacement. The country is now among the top four globally in terms of acute malnutrition prevalence, with an estimated 13.6% of the population affected. This situation is exacerbated by multiple disease outbreaks, including cholera, malaria, dengue fever, measles, and rubella, putting 3.4 million children under five years at high risk. The health crisis is compounded by a significant decline in vaccination rates and the destruction of health, water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure due to ongoing conflict.
The report further underscores the issue of internal displacement, with approximately 10.9 million people displaced within Sudan, 8.1 million of whom were displaced after mid-April 2023. In addition, about 2.2 million people have fled to neighboring countries to escape the conflict. The ongoing conflict has also led to land governance issues, with many people forced to abandon their homes and lands. Floods have affected an estimated 124,000 people in areas where about 230,700 people are at risk of famine between June and September 2024. The humanitarian response has seen the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) allocate $25 million, with additional funding pledged by partners at the UNGA high-level side event.
