As part of the Global Programme for Responsible Land Policy (GPRLP), a model for communal land management in the landscape of the Lake Chamo watershed in Southern Ethiopia was designed, tested and analysed by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, together with the project Forest Landscape Restoration and Good Governance in the Forest Sector (Forests4Future), on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The overarching goal of the pilot is to facilitate communal land titling as a catalyst for Forest Landscape Restoration in Ethiopia, bridging the connection between land tenure security and forest resources development. It primarily targets smallholder farmers in the Lake Chamo watershed, encompassing five kebele administrations. The pilot focuses on developing a gender-responsive forest resource user system, officially recognized by local government authorities. This system makes use of the legal provisions for forest resource development and land use rights and thus directly benefits community members and ecosystems within the Lake Chamo watershed area.
