Land Monitoring

Land monitoring systems are crucial tools for improving the governance, ownership and management of land around the world.Below you will find a short description for each of the principle land monitoring systems in use today.

OPEN is one of the Land Portal’s three strategic pillars (INFORM | OPEN | DEBATE). The State of Land Information program encapsulates the Land Portal’s work in opening up land data and information for public access.

The Land Projects Database is the most complete source of information on land governance projects worldwide. It includes development projects since 2012. Most of the data is retrieved from the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) and curated by a team of experts in the Land Portal. Below is a demo version of the database released in October 2023. We are continuously working to curate the data, so please contact us if you see any mistakes or gaps in the information. The VGGT are the internationally negotiated framework to improve land governance. Drafted by over 1000 stakeholders with different cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the VGGT were negotiated by Member States of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) and endorsed on 11 May 2012. According to the Land governance programme map and database of the Global Donor Working Group on Land, there are currently 253 active programmes worth 2.6 billion USD related to the VGGT.

The SDG Land Tracker provides easy access to official data and information on all land-specific SDG indicators. It concisely explains the indicators, why they are important, and tracks progress. Context UN member States endorsed the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and committed to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - a set of 17 Global Goals, in a 15-year period. The F&G are a regional framework and a widely acknowledged tool to improve land governance in African countries. Endorsed in 2009, the F&G are a collaborative effort of the African Union Commission, the UN Economic Commission for Africa, and the African Development Bank. As part of the Land Policy Initiative, F&G aims to promote socio-economic development and peace and security in Africa by providing tools and recommendations for land policy development and implementation.
