This report produced by Centre for Policy Research (CPR) a comprehensive and systematic study of Supreme Court cases on land acquisition from 1950- 2016 and examined particular conflicts involving major dams, special economic zones, housing complexes and industrial projects. It highlight  the legal trajectory of land acquisition in India and attempt to provide deep understanding on how disputes over land are actually adjudicated in the Supreme Court and nature and pattern of litigation.


A first comprehensive country-wide study of land acquisition disputes in India since independence and for the first time first time ever this study analysed those disputes with various metrics, such as


i) public purpose


ii) procedure for acquisition


iii) compensation


iv) invocation of the urgency clause


v) pendency of claims and


vi) tracks trends with respect to distribution of disputes across geography and time, and central and state laws.


It also analyses litigation under the newly enacted LARR Act, 2013 for the period of three years-2014 to 2016. The study also analysed State wise distribution of litigation, unpacking compensation claims, trends in awards of compensation, legitimacy of the land acquisition, and procedural irregularities in the acquisition among others.
