This document is the first part of a two part manual on local level assessment of land degradation and sustainable land management:
? Part 1 ? Planning and Methodological Approach, Analysis and Reporting
? Part 2 ? Field Methodology and Tools
The two parts should be used together as Part 1 provides the background information for the conduct of the methods and tools that are provided in Part 2. The manual incorporates inputs and feedback from many individuals involved in piloting the local level land degradation assessment tools and methods in the six countries that participated in the Land Degradation Assessment in Drylands project (LADA) supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and executed by FAO during the period 2006-2010. It draws on tools developed with the World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT) for the assessment of sustainable land management (SLM). It also incorporates feedback from a series of national and inter-country workshops conducted during the period 2007-2010.
