This Decision approves the master plan on socio-economic development of the Mekong Delta key economic region through 2020, with orientations toward 2030 with the following principal functions: The Mekong Delta key economic region (embracing Can Tho city and Ca Mau, An Giang and Kien Giang provinces) is a key region for producing food, aquatic products and flowers and fruits, significantly contributing to ensuring national food security and the exploit of agricultural and aquatic products of the whole country. It is a major energy center of the country in the southwestern waters. - The Mekong Delta key economic region is a large service and tourist center of the whole country, including Nam Can national tourist zone, and especially, Phu Quoc island, with high-quality eco-tourist products of both the whole southern region and the lower Mekong basin.The master plan provides for the development of the Mekong River delta into a national key region for agricultural commodity production and aquaculture and for the development of the marine economy. Overall objectives: To build the Mekong Delta key economic region into a region of dynamic development with a modern economic structure and synchronous and modem infrastructure networks and increasingly improved lives of local people, making greater contributions to the national economy and the construction of the entire Mekong Delta region to be rich and strong, catching up with the average national development level; to ensure political stability and film security and national defense. Orientations toward 2030: The Mekong Delta key economic region will have a relatively high development level with science and technology being a major driving force for socio-economic development.The main objectives of the plan include: agricultural, forestry and fisheries development; sustainable development of aquatic resources and protection of the eco-environment; urban space development; development of water supply systems and of irrigation, drainage and wastewater treatment facilities; protection of the ecosystem of coastal protection forests, of national parks and nature reserves; and environmental management and protection.
