The Inter-Agency Working Group on the Principles of Responsible Agricultural Investment that Respects Rights, Livelihoods and Resources (PRAI), composed of FAO, IFAD, UNCTAD and the World Bank, held a Side Event entitled on Thursday, 18 October, during the 39th Session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) at FAO Headquarters in Rome.

Le partenariat de la République Démocratique de Sao Tomé-et-Principe avec la FAO remonte à 1975. Récemment, cette coopération a porté, entre autres, sur l’appui aux politiques et aux cadres législatifs relatifs à l’alimentation et à l’agriculture, et sur une vaste gamme de projets de développement régionaux et nationaux, dans des domaines comme les technologies de pêche et la commercialisation des produits de la pêche, la gouvernance des régimes fonciers, la réponse à la flambée des prix des denrées alimentaires et l’amélioration de la production végétale et animale.

In this issue, we will be introducing the new Land tenure e-journal, which has just launched its first issue. This e-journal is dedicated to land-related issues, including land tenure. We will also learn about the recently issued report, the State of the World’s plant genetic resources for food and agriculture and we will introduce you to the new web site gearing up for the 2012 event marking the twentieth anniversary of the Earth Summit - FAO@Rio+20.

México es uno de los miembros fundadores de la FAO y, durante 70 años, la asistencia de la Organización ha contribuido a mejorar la seguridad alimentaria de las comunidades rurales más pobres del país. Actualmente el Gobierno se dedica a impulsar una Cruzada Nacional Contra el Hambre y a la disminución de la pobreza extrema. La cooperación con la FAO contribuye a consolidar la presencia de México como país con responsabilidad global en temas estratégicos para la seguridad alimentaria y el desarrollo agropecuario.

Dans ce numéro, nous examinerons une nouvelle publication intitulée « Paiements pour services environnementaux et sécurité alimentaire ». Ce document a été produit dans le cadre du processus de préparation de la Conférence Rio+20, prévue en 2012. Nous nous projetterons également dans la semaine mondiale de lâ¿¿eau qui se tiendra à Stockholm, Suède, du 21 au 27 Août, au cours de laquelle la FAO participera à un séminaire destiné à anticiper le thème de la journée mondiale de lâ¿¿eau en 2012 â¿¿ Eau et sécurité alimentaire.

Slovakia joined the Organization in 1993. During the 1990s FAO assistance in the country was focused mainly on forestry and integrated pest management (IPM). The Organization also provided technical support for the development and harmonization of national policies, particularly in the area of forestry and agriculture. Today Slovakia is a resource partner, providing support to a number of activities in the areas of FAO’s mandate, including forestry and food safety.

Estas orientaciones técnicas sobre el uso de recursos pesqueros silvestres para acuicultura basada en la captura han sido preparadas por el Departamento de Pesquerías y Acuicultura de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO) bajo la colaboración de Alessandro Lovatelli, Oficial de Acuicultura, División de Utilización y Conservación de los Recursos de la Pesca y la Acuicultura.

France has long been an active and generous resource partner, working closely with FAO in support of shared food security and agricultural development goals. French expertise and seconded personnel make a vital contribution to the achievement of the Organization’s mandate, and the country plays a major role in catalysing global and regional cooperation. French funding supports a wide range of programmes, with a recent focus on family farming, agro-ecology, climate change and resilience, and food security governance.

There is growing evidence that investing in developing countries’ agricultural sector is among the most efficient ways to reduce poverty and hunger. Agricultural investments can generate a wide range of developmental benefits, but these benefits cannot be expected to arise automatically and some forms of large-scale investment carry risks for host countries. Although there has been much debate about the potential benefits and risks of international investment, there is a lack of systematic evidence on the actual impacts on the host country and their determinants.
