Land Tenure Working Paper 16 Governance of Land Tenure Eastern Europe and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) looks at the land governance situation in the region. It has been prepared to provide a base for discussion for the regional consultation meetings on the FAO Voluntary Guidelines on Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land and other Natural Resources. The objective of the study is to evaluate the current land governance situation in the region and to identify main achievements as well as remaining challenges.

Land Tenure Working Paper 17. This publication identifies and assesses issues related to land governance and provides examples of good governance in the Caribbean subregion. This working paper was done in light of FAO’s Voluntary Guidelines on Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land and other Natural Resources.

Le prsent numro d'Unasylva est consacr au quarantime anniversaire de la FAO, et en particulier aux 40 annes d'activits du Dpartement des forts de l'Organisation. Dans ce numro et dans les deux prochains, nous publierons, ct des articles d'actualit, des extraits des livraisons passes d'Unasylva. Par exemple, ce numro contient l'essentiel d'un article d'Andr Marie Aubrville sur la mort des forts de l'Afrique tropicale, tir du N 1 d'Unasylva. Trente-huit ans plus tard, cet article semble particulirement prophtique au moment o la FAO redouble d'efforts pour rsoudre la crise africaine.

Where do forests and forestry stand today in international climate change negotiations? What exactly does it mean to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+)? What are the opportunities and risks for forests in today’s changing climate and is there a clear path forward? The articles in this issue address these and other questions.

A medium-size report that deals with the overall situation of data on fuelwood in Mozambique. The report is composed of four main parts; the first section is a complete description of the country's principal resources and their distribution. The second and third parts are a background to the country's fuelwood and charcoal resources and their uses while the fourth analyses past, present and future trends related to fuelwood and charcoal trade.

This issue of Unasylva looks at various aspects of the overall financing situation in forestry and highlights areas where additional progress could and should be made. The issue draws heavily on material prepared for the June 1996 Workshop on Financial Mechanisms and Sources of Finance for Sustainable Forestry, held in Pretoria, South Africa.

Recent years have witnessed a renewed interest in agricultural investment. In many cases, this new momentum has translated into large-scale acquisitions of farmland in lower- and middle-income countries. Partly as a result of sustained media attention, these acquisitions have triggered lively if polarised debates about “land grabbing”. Less attention has been paid, however, to alternative ways of structuring agricultural investments that do not involve large-scale land acquisitions.
