General
Following the endorsement of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT) in May 2012, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) – in collaboration with its partners – developed a Global Programme to support the implementation of the VGGT. The project – Supporting Implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests – aimed to help countries and their development partners make political commitments and allocate resources towards the eradication of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition. The explicit organizational outcome was increased awareness among decision-makers, development partners and society at large regarding the need to take decisive action to support access to natural resources. This project enhanced global processes to improve governance of tenure through collaborative partnerships for longer lasting impacts, while promoting the application of VGGT capacity development tools and materials. The project also provided support for VGGT implementation through a focused and thematic approach, facilitating mainstreaming of the VGGT and sharing of lessons learned across multiple countries and regions via a transversal approach. The geographical coverage of the project included countries and regions in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
