The Land Portal is a Foundation registered in the Netherlands in 2014.

The vision of the Portal is to improve land governance to benefit those with the most insecure land rights and the greatest vulnerability to landlessness through information and knowledge sharing.

The goal of the Portal is to become the leading online destination for information, resources, innovations and networking on land issues. Through this it will support more inclusive and informed debate and action on land governance and will increase the adoption and up-scaling of best practices and emerging innovations on land tenure.

In the Latin American and Caribbean region (LAC), millions of families live under a constant threat of being evicted from the land and homes on which they live. The urbanization process across the region builds on an essentially unequal basis. As cities and urban populations grow, competing interest and demand for land also grows, be it for housing and food production, as well as for a variety for a variety of economic activities that depend on land.

Twenty-sixteen (2016) was a breakthrough year for the Land Portal Foundation. Through transforming its layout and key features, forming exciting new partnerships, and promoting an enormous diversity of new content, we achieved significant progress towards becoming the world’s leading online destination for information on land. Demand for the Land Portal was higher than ever, with unprecedented global interest in data and information on land governance. The number of Land Portal website visits increased considerably, with consistently 30,000 visits per month as of December 2016.

Es una realidad que hay contradicciones en cuanto al manejo y la tenencia de la tierra en América Latina, siendo una situación importante que impacta en las economías locales y en la vida de millones de personas. Aunque en las últimas dos décadas la mayoría de los países latinoamericanos han implementado en su legislación medidas para promover el acceso y derecho de la mujer a la tierra, siguen existiendo limitaciones que no han permitido un mayor avance hacia la equidad en la distribución de la tierra.
