The United Kingdom has historically played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith in the 19th century, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two world wars and the Irish Republic's withdrawal from the union. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council and a founding member of NATO and the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999. The latter was suspended until May 2007 due to wrangling over the peace process, but devolution was fully completed in March 2010.
The UK was an active member of the EU from 1973 to 2016, although it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union. However, frustrated by a remote bureaucracy in Brussels and massive migration into the country, UK citizens on 23 June 2016 narrowly voted to leave the EU. The so-called “Brexit” will take years to carry out but could be the signal for referenda in other EU countries where skepticism of EU membership benefits is strong.

Town and Country Planning (General Development Procedure) (England) (Amendment) Order 2004 (S.I. 3340 of 2004).
This Order, which applies in relation to England only, amends the Town and Country Planning (General Development Procedure) Order 1995 by altering the time limit for appeals from three to six months.

Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (Amendment) (Wales) Order 2009 (W.S.I. No. 2193 (W.185) of 2009).
This Order amends the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order 1995 in respect of Wales in Schedule 2 which confers permitted development rights in respect of certain development. A new part of that Schedule provides permitted development rights for the installation of specified types of microgeneration equipment on or within the curtilage of dwellinghouses or flats.

Planning etc. (Scotland) Act 2006 (Saving and Transitional Provisions) Order 2010 (S.S.I. No. 431 of 2010).
This Order makes transitional and savings provisions in connection amendments made by the Planning etc. (Scotland) Act 2006 to the Planning etc. (Scotland) Act 2006 in relation with a tree preservation order and a planning agreement entered into under section 75 of the 2006 Act before 1 February 2011.

Products of Animal Origin (Third Country Imports) (Wales) Regulations 2005 (W.S.I. No. 666 (W.56) of 2005).
The products to which the Regulations apply (defined in regulation 2) must comply with the requirements listed, by reference to the relevant Community legislation, in Schedule 1. Trade samples and products intended for exhibition or study or analysis are exempt from the Regulations (regulation 3(1)). Products intended for personal use which comply with the conditions in regulation 3(3), are exempt from all but a few of the regulations. Regulations 4 and 16 define the authorities that enforce the Regulations. Regulations 7, 8 and 9 confer the necessary enforcement powers.
