This study documented existing knowledge on traditional fruits, vegetables and pulses in Kenya and Ethiopia. The aim was to identify neglected and underutilized species with high potential for food security, for their economic value and contribution to sustainable agriculture, based on a literature review and confirmation of existing data by local experts. In order of priority, the top 5 fruit species in Kenya are Tamarindus indica L. , Adansonia digitata L.

It is widely acknowledged that climate smart agricultural (CSA) practices prioritization is influenced by subjectivity and relies heavily on the expertise and exposure of the experts. The objective of this paper is to enhance the precision and objectivity of prioritizing CSA practices by leveraging a combination of research findings and expert knowledge. This is the first attempt to integrate experts’ knowledge and meta-analysis in the prioritization of CSA practices. Before integrating the two ranks, separate approaches were used to prioritize and rank CSA practices.

To improve the farming efficiency, Egypt has been struggling to narrow the water, energy, and yield gaps owing to exacerbated water shortage. For quantitative diagnosis of farming performance, the paper presented an on-farm water, energy, food, and carbon-footprint (WEFC) nexus index made up of four equally pillars. The arithmetic average preserved the multi-centric approach and equal importance of the four pillars.

Seed is life and can be a source of empowerment and disempowerment for women and men farmers. In this study, to close the gender gaps in seed, the Community Enterprises Development Organization, the Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT and the National Agricultural Research Organization developed a seed credit model available to men and women belonging to farmer groups. A mixed method was used to collect information from two districts in central Uganda on how the seed credit model reconstructed access, use, control and resulting benefits.

Rice yield forecasting is a crucial task for management and planning. A rice yield estimation system (RIICE) was developed based on the crop growth model ORYZA and SAR derived key information such as start of season (SOS) and leaf area growth rate. Results from study sites in Sikasso and Segou regions suggest that incorporating remote sensing data, specifically Synthetic aperture radar (SAR), into a process-based crop model improves the spatial distribution of yield estimates.

The world is facing a nutrition crisis, and the way we produce and consume food is altering the equilibrium of our planet, causing environmental damage and biodiversity loss, and climate change which further compromises food security. Children are disproportionately affected, and school meals are being increasingly recognized as a key investment for governments to tackle these challenges. Through national school meals programs, around 418 million children currently receive a meal at school every day.

Seed transmission rates of Pea seed-borne mosaic virus among lentil genotypes in Ethiopia

Evaluation of Pea seed-borne mosaic virus (PSbMV, genus Potyvirus, family Potyviridae) seed transmission rate among 62 different lentil genotypes was carried out during 2021-2023 at Amhara Regional Agricultural Research Institute, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. Seed transmission rates among lentil genotypes ranged from 0.0 to 36.4%. Released lentil varieties (Alemaya and Derso) showed high levels of seed transmission rates (13.5% and 7.1%, respectively).
