The economic role of cattle in communal farming systems in Zimbabwe

This paper is concerned with understanding cattle production in Zimbabwe's Communal Lands, in so-called communal farming systems. Although commercial offtake from Zimbabwe's communal cattle herd is low, communal farmers are productive and rational in their cattle herd management. The economic rationale for cattle ownership is firstly to provide draught power and manure for tillage and secondly to provide milk and meat for local consumption, although the role of livestock in the farming system varies significantly from one part of Zimbabwe to another.

The Thai government has ambitious plan to further promote the use of biodiesel. However, there has been insufficient consideration on the environmental effects of oil palm expansion in Thailand. This paper focuses on the effects of oil palm expansion on land use. We analysed the direct land use change (dLUC) and indirect land use change (iLUC) caused by the oil palm expansion and its effects on ecosystem services supply. Our analysis shows that between 2000 and 2009 dLUC related to oil palm expansion was more prevalent than iLUC.

During Vietnam’s transition from a socialist to a market economy, household’s property rights over agricultural land were considerably strengthened through a land certification program. This resulted in active formal credit and land markets, either of which potentially affects consumption levels and volatility. This article evaluates the program impact with respect to consumption outcomes. In particular, it identifies the channel of impact through which improved property rights affect consumption volatility.

The Netherlands Embassy has requested a study to assess the opportunities and benefits of restoration of degraded steppe areas. The goal of this project is the restoration of degraded land and to develop more sustainable land use with a higher biodiversity. Innovative farming systems are proposed which are both economically and environmentally sustainable agricultural production systems.

In de Albrandswaard wordt de komende jaren door de provincie Zuid-Holland een natuur- en recreatiegebied van ongeveer 600 ha in omvang ontwikkeld, getiteld 'Landschapspark Buytenland'. Dit in het kader van de PKB Mainport ontwikkeling Rotterdam. De provincie Zuid-Holland heeft nu aan LEI, Alterra en CLM gevraagd om enkele bedrijfsconcepten te ontwikkelen voor 'natuurakkers'. Het gaat hierbij om de concepten voor het samengaan van akkerbouw en natuur onder regie van de akkerbouwer.

Hoe zou de land- en tuinbouw er in 2030 uit moeten zien en welke stappen moeten we daarvoor nemen? Deze vragen stonden centraal bij de toekomstverkenningen van de Systeeminnovatieonderzoeksprogramma’s. De verkenningen, gehouden met diverse vertegenwoordigers van belangengroepen, leverden interessante toekomstbeelden op waarmee beleid en onderzoek zich kunnen richten op de gewenste toekomst. Ook zijn knelpunten vastgesteld die weggenomen moeten worden om de weg naar de toekomst vrij te maken.

De workshop 'Toekomstverkenningen landbouwverkenningen in het Maashorstgebied' maakt onderdeel uit van het project 'Toekomstverkenningen van de landbouw in 2030' van Praktijkonderzoek Plant en Omgeving (PPO) en Praktijkonderzoek Veehouderij (PV). Met het project 'Toekomstverkenningen van de landbouw in 2030', geeft het Praktijkonderzoek concrete invulling aan het thema 'systeeminnovaties'. Het project wordt uitgevoerd op twee niveaus: landelijk en regionaal.
