Great Britain formally acquired Malta in 1814. The island staunchly supported the UK through both world wars and remained in the Commonwealth when it became independent in 1964; a decade later it declared itself a republic. Since about the mid-1980s, the island has transformed itself into a freight transshipment point, a financial center, and a tourist destination while its key industries moved toward more service-oriented activities. Malta became an EU member in May 2004 and began using the euro as currency in 2008.
Malta is a parliamentary republic.

These provisions lay down certain amendments to the Development Planning (Procedure for Applications and their Determination). The amended provisions are those under regulations from 4 to 14, which concern the procedure to be followed for the submission of development applications. Schedules 1 and 2, relating to types of applications, are substituted.

Assessment and Management of Flood Risks Regulations, 2010 (L.N. 264 of 2010).
These provisions set out a regulatory framework for the assessment and management of flood risks, aiming at the reduction of the adverse consequences for human health, the environment, cultural heritage and economic activity associated with floods. They regulate in detail the procedure concerning the preliminary flood risk assessment, the identification of areas of potential significant flood risk, the preparation of flood hazard maps and flood risk management plans.
Development Planning (Procedure for Applications and their Determination) Regulations, 2010 (L.N. 514 of 2010).
These Regulations concern the submission and valuation of applications for development plans. Specific provisions regard the environment and development brief to be made in relation to any development mentioned in Schedule 1.
Environment and Development Planning Act (Amendment of Eighth Schedule) (Amendment) Regulations, 2013 (L.N. 121 of 2013).
These provisions supplement the Eighth Schedule of the Environment and Development Planning Act, regarding the procedures to apply to certain types of development.
