This country level analysis addresses land governance in Laos in two ways. First, it summarises what the existing body of knowledge tells us about power and configurations that shape access to and exclusion from land, particularly among smallholders, the rural poor, ethnic minorities and women. Second, it draws upon existing literature and expert assessment to provide a preliminary analysis of the openings for and obstacles to land governance reform afforded by the political economic structures and dynamics in the country.

L'arbre de karité pousse à l'état sauvage dans de vastes parties de l'Afrique de l'Ouest. Cet arbre aux exigences modestes se contente de peu d'eau et protège le sol contre l'érosion. Depuis toujours les femmes utilisent les amandes oléagineuses pour fabriquer de l'huile et du beurre utilisés pour la cuisson et à des fins cosmétiques. Elles vendent également les produits tirés de la noix de karité sur les marchés locaux.

Land is one of the terrains of struggle for most rural women in Africa because of its importance in sustaining rural livelihoods, and social-cultural and geopolitical factors that hinder women from enjoying land rights. Even when there are progressive land laws, as it is for Tanzania, women have not really enjoyed their rights. However, this has not stopped women to keep fighting for their land rights.  They have sought their own approaches by leveraging opportunities within traditional, religious, and formal systems standing for their rights. 

Currently, Tanzania faces numerous challenges related to land ownership, especially in rural areas. The challenges include farmers-pastoralists conflicts, tenure disputes, and alienation of peasants. To address the challenges, the current policies and approaches used in the country need to be changed on the grounds that their inherent shortcomings make the policies unable to meet rampant land problems that the country has faced in recent years and continue to experience.

The task at hand entails the critical review of the Land Laws of Tanzania, chiefly Act No.4 and Act No.5, 1999 and their subsequent revisions. This could not be done out of context, or by confining oneself solely to the statutes. It was pertinent to review the factors and processes that informed the legislation. Towards this end, an extensive literature review on various aspects related to land reforms in Tanzania was done.

The Land Rights Research and Resources Institute held its second National level Public Forum on land on 12-13 May 2005. The two day forum was partly one of the planned activities in the Institute’s three year Strategic plan and a special event to commemorate the Institute’s tenth Anniversary. It thus took place along with other activities such as Training of Trainers (TOT) workshop, preparation and running of a documentary on land rights advocacy, special media programmes, Special theatre performance by Dhahabu theatre arts Group and moving into a more specious office premise.

La Fundación Entre Mujeres (FEM), es una organización feminista de mujeres rurales que durante 20 años ha impulsado procesos de empoderamiento de las mujeres rurales en el norte de Nicaragua y ha validado estrategias articuladas para lograrlo viendo a las mujeres como un sujeto multidimensional capaz de desafiar los límites que le impone la desigualdad estructural y la exclusión de género.

La demanda de agua registra un rápido aumento en todo el mundo y el costo de desarrollar nuevos suministros resulta prohibitivo en muchos países. Paralelamente, la creciente contaminación del agua agrava el ya existente desequilibrio entre demanda y suministro. De ahí la vital importancia de desarrollar los recursos agua y riego en el marco de los esfuerzos por mejorar la seguridad alimentaria y la producción agrícola sostenible.

La tierra no es solo un recurso económico, sino también un factor importante en la creación de la identidad individual y colectiva, un elemento clave para la organización de la vida social, religiosa y cultural así como un medio político. El acceso a la tierra aumenta el poder de las mujeres en sus hogares y organizaciones, a la vez que aumenta su bienestar y reduce su vulnerabilidad.

Desde hace 12 años, la Articulación Feminista Marcosur (AFM) participa en la construcción del Foro Social Mundial (FSM) como espacio de encuentro y de diálogo entre movimientos sociales. Nos convoca, el intercambio y los debates que apuntan a avanzar en la construcción de nuevas miradas alternativas al capitalismo en el terreno político, económico, cultural y social.

AWID presentó la iniciativa “Fortalecimiento de movimientos y organizaciones feministas” (BFEMO, por sus siglas en inglés) como parte de su plan estratégico correspondiente al año 2006. El objetivo de la iniciativa es promover nuestra comprensión sobre los movimientos feministas dentro del actual contexto global y aplicar dicha comprensión a potenciar la capacidad de las organizaciones de mujeres de catalizar, respaldar y sustentar de mejor manera la creación de los movimientos.
