Wageningen Economic Research (WER), formerly Landbouw-Economisch Instituut (LEI) Wageningen UR, is one of the research institutes of Wageningen University and Research Centre (WUR). Within the Netherlands and Belgium, WER is the leading institute for social-economic research in the fields of agriculture, horticulture and fisheries, the management of rural areas, the agricultural sector and the production and consumption of food. Through this research, WER provides support for the decisions that governments and businesses need to make in the fields of competitiveness, the management of production chains, spatial planning, environmental protection, natural resources, the European Common Agricultural Policy and global trading.
WER also performs legal and service-related tasks for the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. The Agricultural Economic Report and other annual reports present an impression of the financial and economic position of companies and sectors.

In 1997 is het rapport van het Staring Centrum 'Meten van Maatwerk: monitoring van het WCL-beleid 1994-1996' uitgebracht. De conclusie uit dit rapport was dat er nogal wat verschillen zijn tussen WCL-gebieden als er gekeken wordt naar sturing en het aantal projecten dat is gestart. Door gebruik te maken van kennis over marketing en samenwerking zou de sturing en integraliteit van de reeds lopende initiatieven uitgebreid kunnen worden. Het onderzoek richt zich op het pilotgebied 'de Meierij' en de daarbij betrokken actoren.

Ruimtedruk Zuidelijke Randstad
Op verzoek van de directie Zuidwest van het Ministerie van Landbouw, Natuurbeheer en Visserij heeft het LEI onderzoek uitgevoerd naar de ruimtedruk in de Zuidelijke Randstad. Hierbij is zowel gekeken naar de huidige als naar de toekomstige ruimtedruk. Ook wordt inzicht gegeven in de diverse prijsvormings- en verwervingsprocessen van grond. Om de regionale verschillen aan te geven zijn 9 landbouwgebieden in Zuid-Holland onderscheiden.
