The Project purpose is to increase food supplies for 600 families of Giharo and Bukemba in Rutana Province of Burundi through promotion and facilitation in better farming methods and practices that will enhance increased food production in the community. T he Project will build the capacity of the community in sustainable land management, mobilization of local resource and adaptation to climate change. The Community of Pentecostal Churches in Burundi (CEPBU) is the main Fida partner in this program. During th e past 4 decades, Burundi has undergone through destructive civil wars that caused a great damaged to the country?s economy. During this period, more than 500,000 fled the country to the neighbouring countries especially Tanzania. After a long process of p eace talks between the rebels and the government, peace agreements were signed and the repatriation process was initiated in which a massive flow back of returnees were settled back to their origin places in Rutana province of Burundi. The resettlement pro cess has faced a lot of challenges in meeting the needs of the returnee who were poor, illiterate, without food and shelter, and lacked farming inputs to start up their normal living. CEPBU and Fida have partnered to empower the community in understanding their rights in response to these challenges. The Project will conduct church leaders training on food security/environment protection techniques and the formulation of food security and Environment protection policy. The partner will influence the commun ity on matters related to food security and environment protection practices. The project will train the Community Coordinating Teams (CCT) who will be a representation of the 600 families on food security and environment protection. The CCT will establis h farmers' groups in the community and train them on saving and credit methods, effective livestock management, preparation and development of tree nurseries and engage them in tree planting and protect of forest areas with contour lines. The project will provide the Community Coordinating Teams with training materials, seeds for demonstration tree nurseries and links to other environment protection organizations. The overall objective of this project is to contribute to the wellbeing of the returnee commun ities in Burundi. It is expected that, at the end of the project the returnees will increase their food production that is enough to sustain their family needs and support their children education

The project?s purpose is to improve the livelihoods of the extremely poor (vulnerable) people living in communities affected by environmental and climatic problems in Eastern Africa region. The regional food security and climate change programs role is to empower Fida partner organizations as duty bearers to expand their environmental interventions through training. The project will be implemented by Fida Eastern Africa Regional food security and climate change program. Fida?s Partners in Eastern Africa a re Full Gospel Churches of Kenya (FGCK), Pentecostal Churches of Uganda (PCU), Free Pentecostal Churches of Tanzania (FPCT), Ethiopian Guenet Church (EGC), Ethiopian Full Gospel Believers Church (EFGBC), The Community of Pentecostal Churches in Burundi (CE PBU), Association of Pentecostal Church of Rwanda (ADEPR) and The Pentecostal Churches in Central Africa (CEPAC). Different kinds of ecosystems have become vulnerable. Wetlands: surface water has decline, yet usage has intensify leading to land degradation and therefore affecting human livelihood. Part of the problem is caused by negative human activity in the communities and part is caused by climatic changes. Rain is a major limiting factor for crops, yet plants will require more water with warmer tempera ture. Warmer temperatures reduce length of growing seasons. Grain yield is highly sensitive to length of season. Crop pests and diseases may increase and irrigation water may decline. Vegetation will dry faster and drinking water becomes scarce.Eastern Afr ica food security and Climate change project will build the regional partner?s capacity to deal with environmental issues and to find better livelihood strategies for people suffering from the effects of climate change and environmental degradation. Since Fida?s Partners have been part of the planning process, they will be the key actors in the implementing process. The planning will continue more deeply in the first year and all stakeholders will be involved in the planning, implementing and monitoring. Ne tworking will be a key factor in this project since lot of knowledge and expertise is available with the government and other NGOs. Partners? project staff, community and church leaders will be trained at Habari Maalum College, Arusha-Tanzania in various i ssues on environment such as tree planting, soil conservation, modern farming methods, rain water harvesting, agro forestry and related courses. The trained leaders and project staffs will convey

Water Politics in the Nile Basin- Emerging Land Acquisitions and the Hydropolitical Landscape

General

Under the theoretical debate on the dilemmas of common poor resource (CPR) management, the Nile Basin can be considered as a classical example. Hydropolitics in the Nile Basin has been comprehensively studied during the last decades. Issues concerning new land acquisitions are beginning to be researched. Academically, studies merging the two ´fields´ is virgin territory. This research aims to investigate the water and land nexus in the Nile Basin and seeks to understand how the current surge in land acquisitions and investments by foreign countries, sovereign wealth funds and private corporations, as well as domestic investors, will affect transboundary water interaction in the region. The research will identify the key land acquisitions, contractual conditions, type of water (irrigation from the transboundary river, groundwater, rainwater and etc.) and analyse the impact on the regional political stability and development. The significance of the project is a result of its unique contribution to merge the areas of land acquisitions and hydropolitics in the regional level, something that has hitherto not been done. In addition, the study seeks to broaden the theoretical understanding of how CPR dilemmas can be understood. From a policy perspective, the recent political changes in the region and the current impasse in the transboundary agreement in Nile basin call for greater understanding of this new dynamic.
