The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. FAO is also a source of knowledge and information. We help developing countries and countries in transition modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices and ensure good nutrition for all. Since our founding in 1945, we have focused special attention on developing rural areas, home to 70 percent of the world's poor and hungry people.

El presente nmero de Unasylva refleja en cierto modo el Plan de accin forestal en los trpicos, ya que sus principales artculos se refieren a las inversiones internacionales en el sector forestal (S.E. McGaughey), y a cuestiones relacionadas con tres importantes programas del Plan: lea y energa (G. Foley); ordenacin de cuencas hidrogrficas, que es una seccin del programa sobre la funcin de la silvicultura en el aprovechamiento de la tierra (U. Chanphaka); e industrias forestales (T.M. Maloney).
La genética y los bosques del futuro
El principal articulo de este nmero de Unasylva, que es del Profesor Gene Namkoong, se basa en la ponencia que present a los debates sobre recursos genticos en el Noveno Congreso Forestal Mundial, celebrado en Mxico, D.F., en julio de 1985. Considerando problemas de naturaleza tanto tcnica como tica, el Dr. Namkoong esboza varias estrategias alternativas para la ordenacin de los recursos genticos de las plantas leosas y examina su aplicacin a una serie de condiciones socioeconmicas, niveles de tecnologa y objetivos biolgicos.
Forest resources mapping of Liberia
This report covers the work of forest resources mapping undertaken by the Remote Sensing Unit of the Forestry Development Authority of Liberia between March 1982 and June 1984. Its principle aim is to reassess the actual forest cover area of Liberia by interpretation of recent aerial photography and the subsequent transfer of this photo detail to 1 in 125,000 map series. The procedures adopted for this mapping study are detailed.
Watershed management field manual Slope treatment measures and practices
This document constitutes the proceedings of an expert meeting on strategies, approaches and systems in integrated watershed management held in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 25 February to 1 March 1985. The meeting was organized jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), and the East-West Center, Environment and Policy Institute (EAPI).
