SAC-SMA a priori parameter differences and their impact on distributed hydrologic model simulations

Journal Articles & Books
Diciembre, 2012
Estados Unidos de América

Deriving a priori gridded parameters is an important step in the development and deployment of an operational distributed hydrologic model. Accurate a priori parameters can reduce the manual calibration effort and/or speed up the automatic calibration process, reduce calibration uncertainty, and provide valuable information at ungauged locations. Underpinned by reasonable parameter data sets, distributed hydrologic modeling can help improve water resource and flood and flash flood forecasting capabilities.

Adapting a GIS-based multicriteria decision analysis approach for evaluating new power generating sites

Journal Articles & Books
Diciembre, 2012
Estados Unidos de América

There is a growing need to site new power generating plants that use cleaner energy sources due to increased regulations on air and water pollution and a sociopolitical desire to develop more clean energy sources. To assist utility and energy companies as well as policy-makers in evaluating potential areas for siting new plants in the contiguous United States, an adaptation of a geographic information system (GIS)-based multicriteria decision analysis approach is presented in this paper.

Monthly spatial distributed water resources assessment: a case study

Journal Articles & Books
Diciembre, 2012

Water resource conservation is of utmost importance, especially for agriculture in developing countries. Frequent occurrences of water shortage have driven more social efforts in researching on water resources spatial distribution, as the land cover changes recently have shown positive influences. For the purpose of efficient water resources management, hydrological processes under different types of land covers and soil textures are supposed to be accurately analyzed and evaluated.

Multi-temporal assessment of land sensitivity to desertification in a fragile agro-ecosystem: Environmental indicators

Journal Articles & Books
Diciembre, 2012
Egipto

Human activities as well as natural events can dramatically affect land degradation negatively or positively. In Egypt, agriculture is a key sector of the economy. Land reclamation seeks to transfer desert areas to agricultural land and support the construction of new villages. The agricultural productivity improvement of these Newlands is slow and requires considerable time due to their fragility and sensitivity to desertification.

Multiple approaches to valuation of conservation design and low-impact development features in residential subdivisions

Journal Articles & Books
Diciembre, 2012

Residents, developers and civic officials are often faced with difficult decisions about appropriate land uses in and around metropolitan boundaries. Urban expansion brings with it the potential for negative environmental impacts, but there are alternatives, such as conservation subdivision design (CSD) or low-impact development (LID), which offer the possibility of mitigating some of these effects at the development site.
